Re: worried about my mom...plz read

Please pass this along to your mom... I pray it prevents you from going through what my family and I are now dealing with.

My dad, now 55, began smoking as a "child" as well. He was just diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of August and given the prognosis of stage iiib non-small cell lung cancer in September... He is undergoing intense chemo and radiation, fighting for his life. He now sees first hand that this illness doesn't only affect him, but all of us as a family. It is torturous watching your parent, who was once viewed as invincible, your protector, your mentor, your hero become so weak and frail... It is the most horrible emotional roller coaster we have ever been put through, and we've been through many losses. Thankfully, we are a close knit family and will fight until we help my dad beat cancer, against all odds... but the strain and emotional toll it has taken on my mother and myself are immeasurable. There are numerous sleepless nights, crying in the bathroom to avoid anyone else seeing you upset, forcing yourself to be strong for your child (his grand-daughter) and reassuring her that it will be ok, being angry at the world wondering why this is happening to "your parent", and most of all the unbearable realization that no matter how well he fights this awful disease.. this diagnosis means that we will have less time together than we would have if he had not had cancer... I wouldn't wish this worry, fear and dread on even my worst enemy.

I pray you and your family never know this pain. I pray your mother quits smoking and sees a doctor to be sure she is currently healthy, if not for her own sake, then hopefully for yours. You never know, your concern may save her life...

With positive thoughts & prayers...

Re: worried about my mom...plz read

graspingforhope-- I am so sorry you're dealing with this--- it is truly evil. My mother was dx in Aug 2009 (she'd been sick, but functional, for 2 mths prior) with small cell (the more aggressive type). She lost her voice in Aug from the golfball size tumor in her left lung pinching the vagus nerves to her vocal cords. She passed in October 2009. It is everything you said it is and I felt so alone and spent many hours crying in the bathroom myself. Being strong through all of that was the hardest thing I will ever encounter. Hugs to you and may God comfort all of you.

Helen-- you are right to be concerned. Your mom is in a very high risk group for cancer. It's never too late to quit.

Re: worried about my mom...plz read

krazy2day... thank you for your empathy. This awful "club" of having a loved one battling cancer isn't one I'd wish on my worst enemy. I am so sorry to hear about your loss of your mother. My heart goes out to you as I can't even imagine how tough that day will be. My dad also has paralysis in one of his vocal cords from the same cause... thankfully it's only the one so far so he is able to speak still, just sounds like he has laryngitis or something I'll be keeping you in our prayers for God's comfort in those moments of sadness that I'm sure don't even disappear. God bless....

With one of my relatives it is good to mention the benefits of something just once and drop the subject without arguing because sometimes they think about it and do it later.

Helen,

I wish you the best with your mom and give you a ton of credit for having battled cancer yourself. I pray your family is never affected by it again. God bless!

Re: worried about my mom...plz read

Hi, my mom is 57 and has been diagnosed with lung cancer in September this year. Back at the end of July start of August she developed a cough similar to a chest infection, but i was worried that it was something more as 3 courses on anti biotics and steroids did not get rid of her cough. My mother smoked for 25 years and gave up just 9 years ago. So at the end of September i came home one evening and she coughed up blood straight away i took her to the hospital. And my fears were confirmed she had cancer. She is now going through Chemo and already her cough has gotten much better and shes able to move more. I hope this helps.

Re: worried about my mom...plz read

My husband smoked since he was about 13 as well. He also coughed and it was horrible sounding, all the time, night and day. I begged him to get his chest x-rayed but he kept insisting all was well. He had a physical every year and he tried to take care of himself by going to gym, etc. Anyway, one day, he coughed up blood, we went to doctor who immediately scheduled him for CT/Pet scans. He was diagnosed, after two biopsys with stage iv non small cell lung cancer. He is on chemo and has done very well. He had two months off from chemo and just started back this month. He says he feels normal, but he is very thin and week. His cancer had already metastized to the bone. The original tumor has shrunken down to pea size and has not activity. His last scans showed two lymph nodes with activity. We pray and we know that his life is in GOD's hand and his will may not be our will. He also knows he is heaven bound should it take his life. I am hopeful that he will be around for a long time yet and so is he. He is fighting and will continue to do so. I sure hope you can get your mom to go now...the earlier it's caught the better; not that she has it but better to be safe than sorry. Blessings, sw

This is so true.

At the same time, lung cancer is tricky. One can clear a physical and a month later be dx. Small cell is pretty aggressive and grows rapidly. It often presents as a flu or pneumonia and is often too far progressed before 'finding' it.

Helen-- I hope your mom is doing well.

Connie & Swaters-- I hope your mom and husband are getting better also.

Hugs to all of you!!
