Cancer scare How do you make a decision?????

Here is my story I had congestion in my lungs and went to doctor he sent me for a regular lung xray. After that they said I had a suspicious mass on my upper right lobe near the helim. I was really scared and thought right then what if it is cancer? I researched everything I could on the subject and they sent me for a ct scan with contrast and I thought finally I would have an answer what it is. I had it they injected the dye that felt all warm and fuzzy and I thought okay now I will know something. Well it turns out the doctor office called and said we are going to refer you to a specialist I was like why can't they see what is going on. So I wait and wait for like 2 weeks and then I go to the specialist and he says to me. We should do a bronchoscopy, I ask him what he thinks it is. He said he thinks it is an infection from whatever. He gives me another round of antibiotics that I take and go through with the bronch with general anethesia. Finally I think now I know the answer, soon I will know. He told me there was a 60 percent chance they would get a good sample as it is in a tough spot to get the scope in. Well about a week later after me calling and calling the flippin nurse calls and says just like this Everything is okay. I was like okay what does that mean. I had to pump her for information. Doc didn't call me at all. I called my primary doctor and he said if it was his wife he would have it out. So they refer me to a thoracic surgeon. Because the specialist still doesn't know what it is. I went last week to the thoracic surgeon. He looked at the test and xrays etc. He said lets wait 3 months to see if it grows. He is like 90 percent is is not cancer. That 3 months will not be a difference. So now I wait I called my primary doctor and am waiting for his answer. If there is anyone out there can you please help me. If you have been in this situation. Please help me figure this out. What you would do?

Re: Cancer scare How do you make a decision?????

First I just wanted to say high, I'm technically not new to the boards but it's been quite a while since I've posted, due to taking care of my Mom who had lung-cancer. She is ok now after 3 years, and I'd just like to say thank you to the warm messages I received from the people on this board.

Now, Van, in relation to you and your situation, I can say the good news and the semi-bad news. The good news is, that from what you are telling me my guess is that it is not lung cancer either. You seem non-symptomatic for now? Is that right? So having said that, at least one symptom should be present if the mass is the size the doctors said it was. Also after a bronch, your doctor should have been able to get a good washing, and if any cancer cells were present, he should be able to tell.
Now, the bad news, there are a number of other detrimental things that can be wrong with your lungs besides lung cancer, can they have as bad an effect on the entire body? No usually the stay local to the respiratory system, but I'm not an actual doctor so I can't give you an accurate diagnosis, especially if I don't know if any symptoms are present, besides general congestion, and if all your test results are inconclusive. So in answer to your question, should you be worried, no I don't believe so, not to the point of keeping you up at night, however this could be a serious underlying issue that needs to be resolved. My advice would be to request all copies/and discs of all your current test results and bring them to get a second opinion. I don't know specifically where in the country you are located but if the answers are hazy that you are getting I'd try a specialist or a University hospital/center. Good luck and good health.
