| | Extensive Small Cell Lung Cancer-- Dad , age 50
Hi. I am new to the message boards, but I needed to get some other opinions/options. My dad who was 49 at the time, back in May was diagnosed with Extended Small Cell Lung Cancer. He went in with chest pains, they did a chest x-ray, noticed a mass, did a CT scan and it verified Mass in his lung. Two to be exact. He was in the hospital for a week. During that time they did test after test..scan after scan. Located more masses (two) in his liver as well. We were told that this form of Lung Cancer has only two stages--Limited--only in one location Extended--It has moved to another organ/location . Well 15% of Lung Cancer pts get this Small cell lung cancer..... He has started a second drug as the first one quit working after 4 rounds /2 CT scans.... they see more in his liver now. (as of Aug)
He started coughing up blood , so now 4 months later after telling us they do not normally do radiation for this kind of lung cancer. But now he has started coughing up blood, they say that they make exceptions to this. So one full week of radiation now...my dad has lost all kinds of taste buds...no appeitite. We are trying to get him to eat. From beginning date he was weighing in at 271, now he is down to 233>>> We as his daughters/family members are constantly doing research to look for clinical trials as suggested by his Dr. Looked at Mayo Clinic in Ro, MN they are actually listing 2 diff ones for dads type of cancer...they will contact us within 3-5 business days. Feels good to have hope for it as every where we seem to look we can
only find things on Non-small cell lung cancer....well that is not what we have so it has been frustrating. Any ideas/suggestions for appetite encouragements ????
