When to seek hospice care

Hello all, I was wondering what you thought about hospice care and when is a good time to think about seeking hospice care.

My mom has late stage metastatic pancreatic cancer. It's spread to her liver, superior mesenteric artery and another major artery in her abdomen.

Recently she's had terrible constipation and takes lactoluse for it. She keeps having a hard time. It's due to lack of blood flow to her intestines, the cancer is invading many places.

She has 7 lesions on her liver as well. Also she has fluid in her belly (ascites).

I would like to know if I should think about hospice care. Her nutrition has decreased greatly, her pain control is extremely poor (she needs IV pain meds). I'm just afraid for her when I go to work and she's home alone.

Any advice you guys have would help.

Re: When to seek hospice care

Absolutely.

It will help her and help you. The general rule of thumb is that hospice is for people with 6 months or less to live and who need pain management. That's sort of a minimum guide and it sounds like your Mom actually could benefit from even more care. I'd really hope you would make the call for her.

Sorry you and your Mom are having to go through this. It's a rough one.

Re: When to seek hospice care

Thank you for your wonderful encouragement. We sought out home hospice for now because she's ambulatory and we want to keep her spirits up for as long as possible. It was the best decision ever. We shall transition into a full time inpatient hospice if and when it is needed.

That's great. Peace of mind is so important at a time like this and having the experts there to help you keep an eye on things will make it all a smoother transition. I don't think "easier" is at all the word, but you know what I mean.
