Unhappy Could my boyfriend have pancreatic cancer? I'm so worried! PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone,

This post is about my boyfriend and I apologize ahead of time for its length. For the past month and a half or so he has been experiencing mild to moderate upper abdominal pain in addition to nausea. At first his pain was only after eating or when he was lying down, but when it started becoming more frequent, he went to the doctor upon my request. At the time, his doctor was on maternity leave so he had to see another one, who diagnosed him with GERD after 5 minutes of pressing on his stomach and my boyfriend yelping in pain. He was prescribed Prilosec and told to come back in 3 weeks if his symptoms hadn't improved. A week later, his pain was persistent and we were both convinced that he didn't really have GERD because although the Prilosec helped to relieve some of his pain, he has never had heartburn and we don't think that much pain would occur with GERD. We really just didn't think the doctor was listening to him or was very thorough. I wrote down a list of questions for my boyfriend to ask the doctor and he said the doctor walked out so quickly that he had no time to ask him questions or even request blood work. We suspected a stomach ulcer and thought that his high levels of stress were aggravating it.

My sister was telling me how thorough her doctor was and how much she liked him. He was accepting new patients so I got my boyfriend to switch to him and schedule an appointment. His new doctor prescribed him Zantac because my boyfriend was getting chest pains from the Prilosec, although it doesn't really seem like his doctor thinks he has GERD. He said he wanted to check out my boyfriend's liver, pancreas and gall bladder so he told him to schedule an appointment for an ultrasound and he ordered some blood work and told him to schedule an appointment to come back and see him in 2 weeks. His ultrasound is on June 14th and he goes back to see his doctor on the 17th.

I researched what blood tests help to determine pancreas problems and learned that lipase, amylase, and bilirubin are all associated with the pancreas. All of those tests were within the normal range, but I was reading symptoms of pancreatic cancer and now it's all I can think about. I'm so worried. My boyfriend is 26 and I know that it's unusual to develop pancreatic cancer until later, but I still can't help worrying. I haven't told him that I'm worried about it because I don't want to worry him over what could be nothing. I tend to think the worst when it comes to his health. He has Generalized Anxiety Disorder so when he was experiencing nausea for the few weeks preceding his abdominal pain, we though it could have been because of his disorder. Now we realize it may have been the beginning of whatever it is that he has. Is it possible that he could have pancreatic cancer even if his blood work came back normal? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated! TIA!

I think there is a good chance he does have GERD- with those symptoms. It can take a while to find the right PPI because everyone is different. I think your boyfriend should see a gastric specialist & have a scope so that you know what is going on inside & a firm diagnoses can be made. If he does have GERD then he should have a scope every few years as a routine anyway because the the acid reflux can be very damaging. The ultrasound should rule out any cancer scares.

I would think it's highly unlikely that he had pancreatic cancer at his age. I have GERD and even though I'm being treated I still have nausea on occasions & bad discomfort lying on my back- particularly after I have eaten. It helps a lot to have nothing to eat after dinner time & to lie on the left side when in bed. It is definitely possible to have "silent reflux" & not be aware of it. Good luck!- & he needs to have further investigation so that you can both have your minds put at ease!

Doctor G***le is not the greatest physician around and usually diagnoses the worst-case scenario. Let the real doctor check it all out. Those tests will reveal many disorders. All you know is that he has abdominal pain and nausea.

Re: Could my boyfriend have pancreatic cancer? I'm so worried! PLEASE HELP!

When my best friend had pancreatic cancer she had sharp rib and back pain and elevated sugar levels and therefore was diagnosed as diabetic. She also had incredible fatigue.
I have GERD and a hiatal hernia. My only symptoms was my throat would close up while I was sleeping and I would wake up choking.
Good to follow up with the ultasound and maybe an endoscopy. I would be shocked if it were pancreatic cancer.

At his young age, I would think it unlikely to be pancreatic cancer...however, it could be pancreatitis. Is your BF a heavy drinker? Alcohol binges can bring on an acute attack of pancreatitis. Either way, it's not a bad idea to have an ultrasound done to rule out something serious.

Re: Could my boyfriend have pancreatic cancer? I'm so worried! PLEASE HELP!

Thank you all for your responses. My boyfriend is still experiencing pain and it has been over 2 weeks since he started his antacid medications. He has his ultrasound on Tuesday and I have recommended that he ask his doctor to refer him to a specialist so he can have an endoscopy performed if the ultrasound is inconclusive. Thanks to all of you, I'm feeling more certain that he doesn't have pancreatic cancer. He never drinks so I don't know about pancreatitis. At this point, I think it may be either an ulcer or gallstones. Hopefully it is nothing more serious. We'll just have to wait and see.

Thank you all again for your help!

Re: Could my boyfriend have pancreatic cancer? I'm so worried! PLEASE HELP!

The stomach lining biopsy that was performed as part of his endoscopy showed a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, but fortunately it had not developed into an ulcer. He was put on antibiotics and now his pain is gone. Best of luck to you, dallascowboyzfa!

His blood tests all came back normal, but I don't think he was tested for H. pylori at the time.
