DRE - Cancer: Prostate Message Board

Does anyone know if a general practitioner is really that qualified to give an adequate DRE? I had read that only a qualified urologist could really determine cancer. I worry about this. It seems that you have to be refered to a specialist, such as a urologist. This only happens when you have a serious urological problem.

So, what do you do if you don't feel that assured from a
general practitioner?

I have also read that some thorough DRE'S can produce an embarassing unwanted erection. Is this fact or fiction?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

yes you can have an erection during one of these procedures. it happened to me. thank god it was a female though........
