father's surgery update!

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to post, my father had his surgery this Friday the 3rd, and it went very well according to the surgeon. He came out remarkably well, bled very little and was told he was in very good physical shape.

My mother was informed that it "looked very good", and we are crossing our fingers that this is the positive news we have been hoping for. Of course we won't have our pathology reports back until Tuesday or Wednesday next week (the lab their is really quite quick!). However, my I have a positive feeling regarding this as the surgeon even passed out a message to my mother during opening the lymph nodes to note that they "looked very good." Giving me more hope that it could of remained contained... so hopefully that nasty Gleason of 9 was deceiving to us all! I think the surgeon was surprised himself, and is not one noted to be upbeat and cheerful by any means, so we take this all very well. Thank you again for everyone's support and I shall post again with his path reports! Now upward and onward to those kegal exercises etc!

Best of luck to anyone pending their surgery or awaiting tests results. I am impressed with the positive attitudes everyone keeps. I certainly think that discovering this cancer myself, that it should be as dominately spoken of as Breast Cancer is for women, hopefully the knowledge will continue to be spread..

Re: father's surgery update!

You make a good point about awareness of this. I keep speaking to people and so many people know someone who has it. Its funny how some cancers are deemed high profile yet others slip by the wayside.

Im glad it seems postive news for your father

Bullun, we love good news! Keep us informed. The women have "outflanked" us on the breast cancer issue, but we're working on the prostate issue.

Re: father's surgery update!

Colomolo & Positive4U:
Thanks! I've spoken and emailed with my dad several times now, and he came home Sunday morning. He's doing fantastic and has me in awe over his ability to get around and how great he feels. Yesterday he was out getting his local news paper, walking up to his wife's ice cream parlor (a luxury treat he's lost with his new low-fat diet). So he's gotten a good few blocks in his walks under his belt and is feeling really good. I'm impressed and will be posting his pathology reports soon.

As for awareness, I realize in part its because not every man wants to run around declaring to the world they have prostate cancer! (You don't see as many women voicing uterine/cervical cancer as openly as breast cancer). Just being an avid runner of many benefit races and seeing so much promoting awareness of Breast Cancer, I'd love to see more for men. But being a woman, its easier for me to say this than it may be for a lot of men to open up about the Prostace Cancer Club they're acquainted with..

Alright here's to hoping I post again with good path results!

Thumbs up lab results back!

I just received the delightful phone call from my sister that my father's lab results came back "fine." And via his email he says they indicate they "got it all". I am more than overjoyed right now and thrilled to be sharing the news with all of you. I can't thank this group enough for all of the support you have been and kept me from many an anxiety attack!

I hope any of you with pending biopsy's or surgeries take note that my father was not given the highest hopes with a Gleason Score of 9, but that doesn't necessarily seem to be a full predictor of the spread of the cancer. Thank heaven!

Now upward and onward to the "side effect" battle, but this shall seem teensy compared to those test results.. Who was it that said they felt they dodge a bullet? I'd say it feels like you've dodged a wrecking ball!

Now... if only we can inform the rest of the male population to be two steps ahead of this disease!
