Question Pain while urinating

Hello all my husband just had his catheter removed yesterday and now he has pain while he urinates. The pain seems to be more just as the last drop of urine comes out. While the catheter was in he had spasms, and blood was coming out of the penis and severe pain....But, now the pain is so intense that it is parlyzing even though the catheter is out.

Thankfully, he doesn't have any of the incontinence issues. If someone is going through the same thing or has any advice please help.

Thanks!

Hi Idavis5199,

Sounds to me like your husband has the same thing that myself and I'm sure many of the people that have had RP experienced after surgery.

I too had severe spasms that were very painful after surgery and my urologists gave me some king of medication to stop the spasms. I don't remember what the medication was called ( it was 4 years ago ), but it worked very well and stopped those painful spasms. Eventually the spasms stopped by themselves and I was fine without the medication. I can certainly recall how painful it was to urinate after the surgery ( and while I had the catheter in as well ) and I actually tried not to go for as long as I could hold it, just to avoid those spasms.

I'm certain if you talk to your urologist he will be able to prescribe some kind of medication to stop those spasms and I'm sure your husband will really appreciate that!

Take care and all the best...Lionel

Re: Pain while urinating

Thanks Lionel! I will make sure he makes an appt before the end of the week to address this with his urologist. We can't wait before all of this is just a faint memory.

Re: Pain while urinating

My husband just had RP on 11/30/09 and experienced inability to avoid after removal of his catheter. Throughout the time the catheter was in, he was in pain, mainly focused on the head of his penis. After 12 days, catheter was removed but he ended up in the ED and had another inserted and was in agony when the nurse inserted it. 7 days later, the catheter was removed and the same thing happened, could not void, and back to ED where they gave him mild sedation and inserted lidocaine into his penis and coated a smaller catheter with lidocaine prior to insertion. He managed to tolerate it this time. He had the catheter removed about 5 days later and has since been in pain dribbling urine with occasional small streams, just enough to keep from being catherized. The doctors say it is bladder spasms because each time a cath was inserted, there was no obstruction, it went through cleanly (although painfully).

Does anyone have words of wisdom for us on how we can ease my husband's pain and discomfort? He is taking 5mg valium twice daily, uroxathral daily, and ibuprofen 800mg daily. I am so stressed out from trying to cope with his pain.
