Re: Re confused diagnosis re prostate cancer.

Hello. Bungalow near the sea sounds very nice! I have only two suggestions for you. First, you should see a urologist who has expertise in prostate disorders. This is not something a general practice doctor can deal with effectively. I do not know how the health care system works in the UK, since I am in the USA, but maybe you can ask your local doctor to refer you to a urologist. Second, the prostate issues will be a lot easier to deal with if you can get the depression under control. You have taken the first (very important) step in that regard, by recognizing the issue and the need to get help. Is there a psychologist or psychiatrist in your town? If you don't know one, perhaps you could call a good hospital in your area and ask them to refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist. Best wishes.

Hello triffks and welcome to our board!

Medved provided key sound advice, so I'll just add a few points.

I'm thinking you may have "just" benign enlargement of the prostate and not cancer, as there is no such thing as "benign" prostate cancer. While benign enlargement often has its own problems, it would be better to have that and not cancer. Have you ever had a "biopsy" to determine whether you have cancer? That is the only way to tell. If you have not had a biopsy, that is an indicator the doctor does not think you have prostate cancer.

Have you brought up the odor problem with the doctor? Seems to me the doc should be able to help you with that. (Or maybe you should find a different doctor. It doesn't seem the one you have is very caring!

Am rather scared by all this,

Welcome to the club, even if what you have is not cancer. These events can be pretty scarry.

Am cutting down on fattty drinks which i s shame cos i love milk and cheese etc. Do I have to cut all these things out.

They do not cause prostate cancer, we think, but dairy foods and saturated fat are thought to fuel the cancer, at least indirectly. Recently, there is less concern with dairy foods. There are a number of lifestyle tactics, many involving nutrition, that appear to help those of us who actually have prostate cancer (and are also good for other health conditions, especially cardiovascular health). I've summarized them in a post of March 6, 2008, "Nutrition & lifestyle tactics - books, resources and a quick summary." By the way, dark chocolate is on the good side of the account book - lots of antioxidants, so a couple of squares a day will probably help more than hurt. Also, red wine appears to be helpful, so a couple of 4 ounce glasses a day would probably be fine , provided you don't have problems with the sugar, with alcoholism, etc. Please know that I'm not a doctor; in fact, I've never had any enrolled medical education, so please take what I'm posting as leads but not as authoritative medical advice.

Its cold here tonight. I used to be a very good stage manager in london

I've been in London but never saw a play there. My wife and are very fond of the Brittish shows on TV - such great acting and staging!

and i get scared cos people say i should give my life to jesus before its too late,

That works for me, but sometimes the Jesus that is offered to people is not the one I know, trust and love. The false jesus is often highly judgemental, delivering huge doses of guilt , rather than the grace that can make your burdens evaporate and send you out to help others rather than being a helpless, hopeless victim . I hope you do find hope there. It can change your whole outlook!

does nto exactly cheer me up. Pleas would anyone be kind enough to help? thanks J Ps he wont put me on anyting for my depression. i have asked for couclelling but he says theres none available.

Like medved I don't know the UK system very well. If it were the US, I would not stand for that answer. Is it possible for you to change doctors?

Do you do regular aerobic (like walking a lot and jogging, for instance) and strength exercise? That might be hard when you are depressed, but it is something you could do on your own that is known to be effective for combatting depression for many of us. A good church group (not a bad one!) could also be a wonderful help!

I hope you can boost your spirits up.

Take care,

Jim
