looking for hope

Hi all

I was dx in March of 2009. My PSA at the time was 5.4 and gleason was 5+4=9. Bone scan and CT scan both negative. DRE found hard spots but thought cnacer was confined. Uro suggested RP.

Went to the City of Hope and they felt I was a good canidate for a phase 3 clinical trial which included 6 regimines of textore plus lupron evry 6 weeks. PSA drioped to .1 then had RP. Labs showed not confined to prostate with seminal invasion. Lynphnods were clear.

PSA 1 month afetr surgery undetectable. 4 months after surgery undetectable. 7 months afetr surgery .5.

Had another series of scans bone and ct negative. Prostacint scan showed mild activity in the prostate bed.

I am now undergoing ebrt at 70g 39 sessions. I am on number 17. Feeling fine although urination frequency has increased. The reason for the 70g is that they are also hitting the lymphnods. Would like them to increase to 80g at the half way point. Does this make sense. I am also taking capsaincin and vitamin D3.

Am I doing everything right or am I missing something.

Re: looking for hope

Hi rhome and welcome to the board! I'll insert a couple of comments in green, and I hope you get some input from our radiation folks. I was on that course for a challenging case, so I know something about it and have paid some attention to radiation over the years, but decided to rely only on hormonal therapy (for the past 10 + years). I never had radiation (or surgery - was rejected up front).

I'm sorry the surgery was not successful after you paid all those dues!

While the general feeling now favors around 78 to 81 or so Gy for initial treatment, my impression is that a lower dose is used when the prostate has already been removed. That makes sense to me, as the prostate volume can affect even initial radiation, and the volume is close to zero after it has been removed.

I am also taking capsaincin and vitamin D3.

Has the doctor given the green light to that? The capsaisin is probably fine, but I know there is some concern with antioxidants during the course of radiation; I think I remember somewhere that capsaisin is an antioxidant. It would be worth checking out. I'm almost certain there is no problem with vitamin D3 during (and after) radiation.

Am I doing everything right or am I missing something.
I hope you get more responses from radiation guys/gals, as I noted earlier. I remember reading that the supplement quercitin enhances the effectiveness of radiation, but I'll leave that to you to check out. Are you on hormonal blockade during the radiation and after? Studies are indicating that that helps!

Take care and good luck,

Jim

Re: looking for hope

Thanks IADT3 for the welcome.

I have asked both by onc and rad onc if the capsaincin is ok to take and both gave the go ahead. I am not currently on any hormones.

Has anyone else heard about the studies of cayenne (CAPSAINCIN) in regards to pc. Also vitamin D3.

Re: looking for hope

Hi and welcome to the board. I had an RP in 2005 followed by rad started in Nov 2005. Gleason was 4+5. Psa at start of rad was still +10.

I had minimal side efffects from the radiation and what I did have disappeared within a week after completion.

Since that time I have been on Intermittent Hormone Therapy.

I switched oncologigists in May 2009 to Dr Myers after reading his book Beating Prostate Cancer. An excellent read but the supplement information is dated.

From June 2009 triple blockade Casodex, Lupron and Avodart. My last PSA in May was <.01 and I came off Lupron and Casodex but stayed on Avodart.

I take a Vit D3 supplement and have regular Vit D 25- hydroxy blood tests. Dr Myers likes to see it up about 60 ng/ml which has been a struggle for me in spite of my living in the tropics..
I also take a Full-Spectrum Pomegranate and Super Bio-Curcumin and Micronized Resveratrol based on his recommendation.

I thought there was a study done at Cedars Sinai on CAPSAINCIN that might be on the Gov site.

By the way I am feeling fine and have a positive outlook for the future.

John
