Vitamin D and Prostate Cancer

According to John Hopkins Health Alerts bulletin, "Vitamin D may turn out to be a ray of hope for men with prostate cancer. Laboratory and population-based research suggest that adequate levels of vitamin D reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer and may help suppress the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells in men who already have it..."

I was Vitamin D deficient until I was put on 50,000 international units a week for 8 weeks. Now I am at an optimal level (54). I look to be on a maintainance dose. John Hopkins bulletin suggest 15 minutes of sun exposure per day and 1,000 IU of Vitamin D.

Do you have knowledge or experience on Vitamin D related to prostate health?

I think you can overdose Vitamin D or Vitamin D can reach toxicity level, but I don't think overdose comes easily. I am not sure about 40,000 IU per day. Perhaps we need to check the level periodically and become aware of overdose symtoms. My oncologist suggested 2,000 IU of D3 per day.
