Total incontinence two weeks after robotic radical prostatectomy
PC, Gleason Grade (3+3): 6, Pathologic AJCC: T2, negative margins, 68 years of age.
On December 8, 2010, I had my robotic radical prostatectomy. Today (2 weeks later) I feel great, walking 3 miles a day. However, I am totally incontinent during the day (fine at night while in bed). Is this common after this type of operation?
Tks
Re: Total incontinence two weeks after robotic radical prostatectomy
Hi Pepe,
We should not say that incontinence is normal in a robotic RP. This side effect is a risk in many types of treatments that interfere or can damage the urethral sphincter nerves close to the bladder. However, the problem may not be permanent. Many guys never experienced incontinence and some have reported nasty effects.
It is more common to hear guys saying that they were ok on the third month after treatment.

Thanks for taking the time to address my question, and Merry Christmas to you and your family...you just confirm what I thought. I am hopeful and keep doing my Kegels before making and appointment with my Urologist in 3 months. Tks again...

12/26/10- Update 18 days after RRP
Things are getting a lot better. I have regained some control during the day. I went from 10 to 5 pads a day. Hope is in the air...I keep walking 3 miles a day, and doing as many Kegel exercises as I can...
Re: Total incontinence two weeks after robotic radical prostatectomy
Hi Pepe,
Congratulations on your progress. Kegels exercises are excellent but your body should do the job naturaly without external help. I mean, "no-kegels" and "no-padies".
Try to check if that it is possible already.
I wish you a quick recovery.

Re: Total incontinence two weeks after robotic radical prostatectomy
I have had a radical prostatectomy surgery. I had total incontinence that never stopped. Hopefully yours will stop after a month or two. The diaper and pad approach is very disheartening. I tried several other things and found that a condom catheter was a great solution. (I used the 'Gee Whiz' product -- easy to find on Google) After a year I had an artificial urinary sphincter implanted. This is a terrific solution. I still dribble a little but my quality of life has drastically improved. (Note to get the condom catheter to reliably stay on it was a two person job)
