I don't know what's going on with Irv...

Irv has a history of ulcerative colitis but has only had two flare-ups with it in his lifetime. He hasn't had one in several years. However, now something is going on with his bowels which is like his past flare-ups in some ways but not in others. He doesn't have the same discomfort and there doesn't seem to be much blood, if any. He just can't form a proper stool, from what he's saying. Yesterday, he didn't go at all. His sleeps at night aren't long and restful and he looks tired a lot of the time and early into the evening as well. He even looked tired this morning. I'm concerned. He's also losing patience already with this process and we've only just begun. The nurse has been coming on home visits every other day for weeks to deal with his incision as it didn't close properly. Her last visit should be on Friday. I'm afraid of what 2011 will bring. I'm afraid of how this is going to effect Irv on an emotional level. First we have to get to the bottom of what's going on in his bowels and then, determine if he'd still be ok with radiation. Who knows how many hoops we'll have to go through to get to that point. I feel like I'm standing on the edge of that cliff again...Here we go....Not a fun ride down after the jump. I need some feedback, but I don't know what anybody can say about this....Since only doctors and tests can figure this one out.

Re: I don't know what's going on with Irv...

Sometimes the anaesthesia can have a lingering effect on the nerves that stimulate the colon, and they have to be triggered back into action. Is he getting enough bulk-forming fiber in his diet? Usually inability to form stools is related to that. Fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, Fibercon and good hydration might help. A mild laxative like Dulcolax if that fails. Constipation affects sleep, alertness, and mood.

As a child, if I felt dull, listless, head-achy and irritable, my Jewish mother would always ask if I had a bowel movement that day. She was usually right.
