post prostatectomy incontinence and other discussions
I had a conventional radical prostatectomy about eighteen months ago. I was totally incontinent from the beginning (whatever went into the bladder came out with zero control). I started with diapers and guards. Went through about 3 diapers and 10 guards per day. My quality of life was about a 2 on a scale of 10. I looked for other ways of dealing with the incontinence. I ended up using a "Gee Whiz" condom catheter (google it). My penis isn't very big so several other devices didn't work. This condom catheter is awesome. Quality of life went up to about an 8. Turns out to get it on really good it was a two person job -- my wife was a great help -- you can't be shy in this area.
My next step was to go to an artificial urinary sphincter. This has been really great. I have a little drible but compared to total incontinence this is not a problem. Quality of life is now about a 9.
All of my nerves were taken in the surgery. Turns out that you can have an orgasm without an erection. Almost as good as the real thing.
Just a final note: It turns out that after a radical prostatectomy there is a much higher probability of getting a hernia (meta studies have shown this to be true). I've just had my third hernia surgery. The prostate incison was the weak area. (I wish I hadn't lifted that 100 pound pot after my surgery)
