Re: Need reference for permanent seed MD in LA area

Hi tkokinis,

Welcome to the Board!

The LA area is rich in doctors and facilities that treat prostate cancer. I suggest you contact the Prostate Cancer Research Institute (located on Century Blvd., near LAX); it has a helpline. Another resource is a superb education and support group located in Fullerton that goes by the name of The Prostate Forum. Both will have an abundance of local knowledge.

Have you considered active surveillance?

Take care,

Jim

Re: Need reference for permanent seed MD in LA area

I live in LA and don't personally know of any local centers of excellence for seeds that I would feel comfortable recommending. I had considered going up to Seattle for treatment, but eventually decided that CyberKnife was better for me, and more convenient. I know Dr. Demanes at UCLA specializes in HDR brachytherapy (temporary implants) and is Chairman of the American College of Radiation Oncology, so if anyone could give you a lead on who's good for LDR Brachy (permanent seeds) in the area, he could.

Re: Need reference for permanent seed MD in LA area

Hi again tkokinis,

I'll add this to Allen's insights. For well over a decade PCRI has been a cosponsor of a number of nearly annual large conferences on prostate cancer that are mostly for the benefit of patients. Experts in many areas of treatment have made presentations, a good number of them from the LA area. However, while I know that experts in standard brachytherapy (that is, not HDR) have come from Florida (two or more times) and Seattle, I don't believe there has ever been a presenter from the home LA area on standard brachy. (Dr. Demanes, whom Allen mentioned, was a presenter on HDR brachy at last year's conference.)

Take care,

Jim

Re: Need reference for permanent seed MD in LA area

You can contact Dr Mark Scholz, 310 827 7707; I know he sends his brachy patients to someone in Santa Monica. I had my done by Dr Masak, 21st Century Oncology, in Palm Desert and was very pleased with the outcome.
