My bad news and How to get the second opinion.

Finally got my results today. Low grade, Gleason 6 on 3 of 14 samples. Right base 10% and 20%. Left apex 20%. All Gleason 6.

Forgot to ask about staging.

How does one go about getting the samples reread by either John Hopkins or Botswick. Where to contact? Do I need to get approval from my insurance company?

Hello Akai,

The physician who did the biopsy can order the 2nd opinion from wherever you want the samples sent. In my case the brachytherapy center I chose requested the 2nd opinion. They also cleared it with the insurance company.

Thanks, my Uro told me to arrange it and let his girl know?????? I original thought that it was as easy as requesting through him. I remember the first consultation, I asked him, and his answer was that they do that a lot and that they are familiar with the request. I did not know that I would have to do it my self. I also have difficult time getting a hold of his girl, can't get her to return phone calls, very frustrating.

I have contacted both John Hopkins and Bostwick. I am working on getting an appointment with my Uro after the bad news phone call yesterday.

Thanks for your response.

Akai, When you say your Uro told you to arrange through his girl.... are you referring to Dr Ukimara?

Akai,

Get a second opinion at Johns Hopkins.
I am in the process myself.

Jersyguy: i did contact both JH and Bostwick, however I made an appointment with Dr.Wilson at City of Hope and the nurse told me that they want to read the samples themselves. So, at this point I will be sending the slides to City of Hope first.

Akai, We seem to be going down a similar path at almost the same time and I'm sure there are some good ideas to share. There is a support group held locally at a nearby clinic once a month that I'm thinking of attending as well. We all could use support as well as good information.
