Getting rid of tans - Cancer: Skin Message Board

I don't know where to post this, but I guess this is the appropriate place to do so.

Anyway, I used to have a really bad tan (as in dark, dark, dark!) in the summer, and it slowly faded away during the winter months. I hadn't been getting lots of sun exposure, so I guess it went away and back to my original color. Is it possible for a tan to actually go away?! I'm the skin type that never gets sunburns, but only tans. Meaning I tan very easily.

I recently joined my high school track team, and I got tanned again... and it was the first time I got out into the sun, too. The heat wave contributed to it, I guess. The sunblock didn't work, but that may be because it was from five years ago.

I'm going to send my dad out to buy 'fresh' sunblock from the store today. Would a really high SPF do any good? Something beyond 45? I've heard that the limit was 30 and that anything above that doesn't do anything.

I don't know about people who like getting tans, but I'm not one of them.

You do need a fresh tube of sun block and since you're into sports I would suggest one that doesn't wear off with water or perspiration.

Your smart to think that way. It's not worth it. Most young people don't think that way. When I was young I wanted to get as tan as possible. Of course that was before we knew how bad the sun was for us. And even if I did know I don't know if I would have protected myself. Anyway, I am paying for it now in the form of skin cancer. So far it's the type that can be cured but I have to constantly be on the watch for it.
