worried about mole

I have a large mole on my neck, about a centimetre wide and sticking out maybe 2-3 mm. I have been keeping an eye on it for years, and while it has always worried me my doctor said it was fine.

Earlier today when I was fiddling with it, a piece came off in my hand. Is this normal? The piece was irregular in shape, and slightly smaller than a pin head - but definately larger than a normal piece of dry skin that might come loose when you scratch. I scratched it a little more, and several more similar sized pieces came loose. This has never happened before.

The pieces are brown, and generally mole coloured, not like normal skin. They are also quite hard in texture. I kept them in a jar in case the doctor needed to look at them or something.

Should I be worried about this? Is it normal?

Re: worried about mole

IMO, you should pressure your doctor into a biopsy. Just tell him flat out that you are worried about it and nothing is going to ease your mind but a biopsy, and you don't mind the scar. If you are firm, they will listen.

Re: worried about mole

I have a large mole on my back that 'sheds' or peels from time to time. It's like the whole top comes off in little crusty bits. My Specialist has checked it out and said it was nothing to worry about.

Re: worried about mole

definitely have a dermatologist check it out. my son had a growth on his knee that appeared to be a wart. he's only 6 so everyone kept dismissing it as normal. thank god i insisted on seeing a dermatologist, they removed it and it's a form of benign juvenile melanoma and he has to go back and have more tissue removed to make sure they got it all. in this case an ounce of prevention and a ton of persistance went a long way.
