daughter got a bad sunburn - Cancer: Skin Message Board

My daughter is a fair redhead - she is 10. Last week, she was at tennis camp. My husband had applied sunscreen on her on the Monday and Tuesday - but on Wednesday - she applied it herself. I think she missed her neck completely. She got a bad burn that day, that as the evening went on, got larger and looked worse. By Saturday, a portion of the burn (right side of her neck) had turned into a second degree burn and was infected. The doctor prescribed antibiotic cream.

My question is, how much is she at risk now because of that stupid mistake. I'm so upset about this. She is my life!!! My doctor said nothing can be done now, and not to worry about it because a lot of people get burns and nothing happens... just like lots of people smoke and don't get lung cancer.

Does anyone know how much this increases her risk? We have always been very good at applying SPF 45 on her - and she rarely shows signs of redness on her skin.

I don't think there's anyway to know what the increased risk is. Many people get a bad sunburn and never develop cancer.. and even if it does cause cancer it may not be for decades. the best is to just be cautious from here on out... especially on her neck.. and not to worry! As a fair skinned person she'll probably always want to be extra cautious of changes on her skin anyways.

I am not sure if supplements can help to cure sun damage or not...
Doctors say there is no evidence...it doesn't mean they don't help..it just means there hasn't been a study..common sense would tell you that antixoxidants in some shape or form may help to reverse sun damage...
