boyfriend's battle - Cancer: Skin Message Board

My boyfriend had skin cancer removed from his back earlier this year. He didn't require any further treatment after the removal. He's now worried that he has another spot of cancer. He has lots of freckles, a few moles, and he was a cross country runner for his entire high school and college career (lots of sun). I'm not sure what type of cancer his was and I don't have too many specifics at the moment but I'm wondering what the chances are of recurrence with most common types of skin cancer. Also will we ever be able to share a normal life (he's only 27)? I'm so afraid he's going to die young and leave our family without him. Any advice, suggestions, or statistics? Thanks everyone.

If your boyfriend had melanoma, it is very important that he keep up with his skin. What type of follow up did his doctor tell him he needed?
There is always a chance of reoccurrance and if there are any changes in his moles or something that just isn't right, he should be checked by his derm.
Depending on what you consider a normal life - I have melanoma and I live a normal life. I have changed things in my life but it is still normal. The main concern is to have any life together and that won't be possible if he ignores symptoms and doesn't continue regular check ups.
Hopefully it is nothing but he should probably be checked to make sure. Best wishes to you both.

Your boyfriend needs to start using a high protection cream against the sun. If he isnt already doing it.

Anyone who has had a history of cancer should never skip any follow up appointments even if they have no signs of it.

I wouldnt like to sepcualte on the reoccurance or leading a normal life, but surely if he doesnt skip any appoinments and if it does come back then they have a better chance of curing it.
