Melanoma Treatment Question

Hi there,
New to these boards but have a question and just getting opinions.
I was diagnosed with Melanoma and went to see the specialist today. I'm still a bit confused about everything he said as I kind of thought I was taking in the information but apparently I really wasn't!

I know I have an intermediate stage melanoma.... I know I have a rating of 3 on a scale of 1-15. I think he said it was 2.6 mm big. He wants to do a PET scan to check my lymph nodes. There is a 15-20% chance of it spreading.

Now my dilemma is public vs private. If I go private I can get it tested and teh excess removed on Monday but at a cost of $6000. Or I can wait til the 22nd of November and do it public. I'm wondering if it would be OK to wait 3 weeks. I don't want to take it lightly but at the same time I don't want the stress of finding the money if 3 weeks wouldn't matter too much.

Any opinions? Or anyone else faced with the same thing? Am going to talk to my doctor when he gets back to work too.

Re: Melanoma Treatment Question

Hello and welcome!

I, too, was diagnosed with melanoma back in March 2007. Mine was .7mm, so it wasn't very big at all. Still, any time the doctor says "melanoma" it is very frightening!

Although melanoma can be an aggressive and fast-growing cancer, waiting the 3 weeks until 11/22 shouldn't matter in the larger scheme of things. Your doctor is already going ahead with a PET scan (good thing!), which will determine if the lymph nodes are involved. At 2.6 in depth, waiting 3 weeks is probably not going to add all that much more to the depth of the melanoma - if any at all. Besides, you must also think of your mental well-being: if you will be stressing over trying to get $6,000, that is not going to do anything good for your physically. It's really best to avoid stress wherever possible right now.

It seems your doctor is on the right track, and, being from New Zealand, you are in an area of the world that is known for melanoma treatment. You should do well. I'll be sending good thoughts your way. Good luck, and keep us posted!
