Over the course of the past 3 or 4 months, I have developed a small, strange red growth on my mid-back. Initially, I thought it was just an insect bite, but it continued to bleed very frequently and spontaneously, and it has now developed into a very distinct growth. It doesn't bleed nearly as easily as it use to, but it is growing pretty quickly (now about the size of a pencil eraser). Please see the attached pictures (sorry - they are pretty gross). Does anyone have any idea what this is? Healthy 26-year old female. I have a dermatologist appointment in about two weeks. Thanks!
Hi, did you go camping or were you in the woods or anything? It does look like some sort of bite or something to me. Or did you have a mole on your back there? Please let us know what the Dr. says. Have you put any cortisone cream on it or anything? I'm assuming you've shown it to you primary care.
No camping, no mole there previously (at least not that I can remember!). I have not put anything on it except a band-aid to help with the bleeding, and I have shown it to my primary who said couldn't tell what it was (it was particularly scabbed over at the time), but that it needed to be excised and biopsied. Anyone have any idea what this could be? In my slightly paranoid googling, it looks like it is probably a pyogenic granuloma, which is harmless. However, I read that amelatonic nodular melanoma is often indistinguishable from a pyogenic granuloma...does anyone have anyone experience with something similar to this?
That is a funky little growth, isn't it? I've no idea. I've had nodular melanoma, and while mine was raised, it wasn't to the degree this is.
The human skin can do a lot of strange and wonderful things - and not all of those things are cancerous or necessarily dangerous nor life-threatening. You are doing the correct thing in seeing a doctor and having it removed and biopsied. Please do come back and let us know what the doc says. I would be interested to know.
