Biopsy results... Help understanding?

Hi, I recently over having a mole removed and had to go back urgently to have lesions removed from the same area.

I had my second biopsy which stated:

"a compound melanocytic lesion with severe architectural atypia and moderate cytologic atypical."

They took peripheral margin: 3mm and deep margin: 5mm

Can anybody please tell me what this means? The doctor tried explaining to me but my head was all over the place and I genuinely haven't got a clue, and google isn't helping...

Much appreciated.

Re: Biopsy results... Help understanding?

I'm not sure about the part you have in parenthesis, but they did take a bit of skin. It wasn't a wide excision, though, was it?

This sounds to me as if you had atypical moles, but then, I'm not a medical professional. What I would suggest, strongly, is that you call your doctor's office and ask to have the doctor or his nurse explain to you what this means. Often, doctors attempt to explain things, and our heads are swimming, and things start to meld together. Always have a doctor explain this stuff in very simplistic terms, and always repeat back what you think the doctor is saying to you. More often than not, what you think the doc is not what is being said, and they will re-word it. I would call and ask for an explanation. And don't think you might look foolish. This is YOUR body and YOUR health. You have a right to know and understand all the facts.

Re: Biopsy results... Help understanding?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. The scar is 10cm in length, I think thats because I had a really horrible keloid scar from the original biopsy so they explained that they would have to remove the whole scar and it would result in a longer scar. But I don't mind, its much neater than the first one and my doctor said it was better to take more to be on the safe side.

I really appreciate the reply Thanks.
