Shave Biopsy-Is it painful?

I have to have a mole removed from my back in a couple days. They are doing a Shave biopsy. The mole is 5mm x 7mm. They are obviously going to numb it BUT, do you still feel it? How painful is it? I am pretty anxious about this.

Re: Shave Biopsy-Is it painful?

The pain only comes from the lidocaine injections, you won't feel the shave biopsy. In my experience the shave biopsies can be more sore afterwards than a punch biopsy and mine usually take longer to heal than the punch biopsies because they aren't sutured shut, but I've had a shave biopsy (on my back) that wasn't sore at all unless you rubbed it. Mine normally feel like a graze but keeping them moist (I use aquaphor) and covered if possible helps the most. If the biopsy site dries out and scabs it will get tight, hurt more and scar worse. Hopefully it won't bother you at all. I've had 8 shave biopsies in the last 5 months and I've lived to tell....you'll be fine

Re: Shave Biopsy-Is it painful?

Thank you for sharing!! How deep do they cut? It just seems like it would hurt, but everyone assured me that you cannot feel it. It just looks like it would be painful. The assistant told me it's like when you scrape your knee. How many millimeters deep does the shave go? 8 shave biopsies in 5 months? You're a pro then!

Re: Shave Biopsy-Is it painful?

I don't know the exact depth of the biopsy, but I know they aren't very deep on me. They might vary from person to person. Mine have barely bled afterwards although they may do some kind of cauderizing that I'm unaware of. If I had to guess an actual depth I'd say about 1-2mm??? Anyone else got a more precise answer?
