Question Possible Skin Cancer?

Hello,

I was hoping that someone could ease my mind while I wait for a medical appt. I'm filled with worry and concern, as I've never experienced anything of this nature before.

About 2 weeks ago, I woke up out of the blue with half of the end of the tip of my nose swollen. (Very noticeably swollen) It was also red in color. (Not lyme, only red with swelling) No lumps or bumps. I assumed it was a bug bite of some sort. It never itched, but was initially sore to the touch. (No longer is sore)

Since then the swelling is gone, but yet a small, red circular patch remains. The red patch is not crusty, nor does it bleed. (It's much smaller than it was)

Does this sound like skin cancer to you? When skin cancer first appears, does it come in the form of swelling as I initially experienced and then completely go down? I wouldn't think so, but made an appt. with my dermatologist to be on the safe side.

For those of you that suffer from skin cancer, my heart goes out to you.

Thank you for any thoughts you may have to offer.

Re: Possible Skin Cancer?

Sounds more like an insect bite to me. Skin cancers, except melanoma, start with Actinic Keratosis, dry and flaky skin. Melanoma starts with a dark coloured mole like appearance which expands fairly rapidly and with irregular shape and colour variations.

Re: Possible Skin Cancer?

The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.

Re: Possible Skin Cancer?

olddurro & jennirvan34,

Thank you both for your replies. You've both echoed what I had thought.

It's shrinking down, but still there to a small degree. At this point, I'm assuming that a bug had a field day with me!

When it had not gone down in a reasonable amount of time, I did become concerned due to not being a stranger to the sun in my younger years. For some reason, when young, we often seem to think we're invincible.

Thanks again, I appreciate both of you taking the time to write.
