Paranoid about Stomach Cancer

Hi,

I'm new here. I was diagnosed with GERD last December via endoscopy. I was diagnosed with Esophagitis, Grade B and moderate gastritis. The biopsy showed areas of focal chronic inflammation in my stomach, and mild inflammation in my duodenum.

Lately I have been becoming more and more worried (near obsessive) about stomach cancer. Believe me, I know the odds are with me, but I also know that there are 30-year-olds who DO develop stomach cancer.

I am 36 years old, 3 kids, take 30 mg Prevacid daily, don't drink or smoke and am not overweight. I'm not even sure how I developed reflux in the first place, other than my pregnancies.

Prevacid has been doing the job, up until the past week or so, although even with the Prevacid, I am constantly belching, which I never did before. Even on the package insert for Prevacid, it says that taking it can mask the symptoms of stomach cancer.

I just can't shake this fear, and the extra anxiety certainly isn't helping. Does anyone else share these fears or still have belching while on a PPI?

Thanks for this very helpful forum.

Molly

Re: Paranoid about Stomach Cancer

Well, first of all let me just tell you a little tidbit. Be worrysome about what illnesses you may have or could have or one day might get/having anxiety, can make your stomach problems 100 times worse. So if you can try to not think about it so much, your stomach should feel better. To be honest, that is probably why your medicine isn't seeming to help anymore... and anxiety or stress could have played a big role in why you got it in the first place. I don't know, just something that I know from experience.

Now, I think that it is a concern that always lies in the back of the head of most people with this problem. And in some small way, you should. There is always the possibility, but its not too probable. It depends on many factors, including how long you've had it, does it make you throw up and for how long, your age, whether you smoke, do you drink a lot of caffeine, and several others.

Maybe you can find out if anyone in your family has/had GERD. They might think of it as GERD so you'll have to explain what it is to them. (Most people don't know that terminology) Maybe then you can look to see if genetics has something to do with your GERD as well as maybe there was some anxiety in your family.

Just my thoughts though, just giving you advice on what i've done or know from experience.
