Hi,

Yes, I am a smoker and want to quit but having having hard time doing so due to work.

Another problem I do have as well which I can't figure out what cuases the larynx goes gurgly when I speak so u have to cough it.

Thanks for your help

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Vinnie:

As a guy who has survived throat cancer (six years thus far), my advice is to get to an ENT specialist and let him scope your throat to see if something is going on.

I developed a severe hoarseness for a month or so. Finally lost my voice and that told me to go see what was happening. Fortunately, that allowed early detection of the vocal cord cancer that I had developed.

Unsolicited advice: stop smoking. A high percentage of the oral and throat cancers are the result of smoking. At least, that's what the specialists I've talked to indicated.

The gurgly bit sounds like you may have atypical smoker's cough although an ENT can advise you on that.

See a specialist, please. And best of luck.

Bill

Throat cancer, if present, almost always presents as first a drop in the pitch of the voice, and then eventually hoarseness. All of this happens in the scale of months. I still think you should get a scope of your larynx, but if you're not hoarse, the worry likely isn't cancer...just more irritation from your smoking.

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Vinnie,

My opinion, you should still see your doctor. My friend who has throat cancer didn't have many symptoms until he had an enlarged lymph node in his neck and then at that point it was stage 4. I can remember him saying about having a couple sore throats and some hoarness but not much. It is just better to be safe and get checked. Your probably just fine but I tell everyone who is concerned about my friend because the earlier it is detected the easier it is to treat. The doctors told my friend this, they told him too he shouldn't have waited months to get the lymph node checked when it was swollen! Just for peace of mind, go to the doctor! Good luck!

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help - Ive seen my GP

Hi all

I seen my GP today, she looked down my throat with a lollypop stick looking thing and some sort of light or magnifier and got me say ahhh and saw a lot of mucus down my throat.

Wonder if that was culprit of this problem so she prescribed me antibiotics to clear the mucus.

Does you doctor think it could be GERD or acid reflux?

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

hi
After 6 months and 3 lots of antibotics it was found that I had throat cancer of the voice box. I lost three quarters of my voice box in a 10 hour operation. I was cut from ear to ear and woke with my head 3 times its normal size because of fluid. I was in intensive care for 7 days. I am lucky that i have any voice left at all. That was sept 2003. I wish with all my being that I had quit smoking before I got to this stage. Please quit. Take Care

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Angel,

Did you say in your other posts what stage you had? (I couln't remember) My friend just finished his radiation and chemo about a week ago. His throat is a mess from radiation but getting better everyday. The doctors will do scans in a month. I guess then we will know if they got it all or if surgery is needed. I think he will need to have lymph nodes removed but i'm not a doctor so who knows. Did you have them removed during your surgery? If so how many? Good to hear from you & continued good health! God bless!

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Hi lbp35
I said I had my op in Sept 2003 it was 2002. Bad memory. Anyway my Doctor did not talk about stages. He just said you have a very agressive throat cancer. It is covering three quarters of your larynx. I had a Tracheostomy for 3 weeks. On my paper work it said SUPRAGLOTTIC LARYNGECTOMY BILATERAL NECK DESSECTIONS. 82 nodes were secured. While they showed variable reactive features there was no evidence of metastatic malignancy. I live with thick mucas always collecting in my throat and needing to be coughed up. My mouth is always dry and I get a lot of Thrush. My voice is a bit weird and heads turn when I talk out in public. Because of my GERD my neck gets really tight when my stomache starts to spasm. My neck feels like someone has their hands around my neck and squeezing tight. I know I am lucky to be alive, but I get fed up a bit sometimes. I guess it's okay eh as we are only human.
Take Care

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Angel,

Thanks for the reply. WOW, you've been through so much! I wish continued good health to you! Just a few questions... I'm not sure what you meant by 82 secured nodes. Does that mean they removed them? I'm sorry, i am new to this cancer stuff. My friend showed 9 positive for cancer from looking at the scans.I thought they had to be biopsied but he just had the scans. He also has the dry mouth from radiation and coughing up mucus. Did you have trouble tasting food? He cannot taste at all the doctor said it may be months for that to come back. Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it!

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

Hi lbp35
On my Pathology report it says secured, that is removed. I did not have Chemo or Radiation because it would of been too much on top of the surgery. I never had any trouble with taste, but it took a speech therapist 3 weeks after the operation to teach me to eat again without food or liquid heading for the lungs, as everything in my throat had been altered someway or other. I had my food thru a Ponsky peg into my stomache. Because of the removal of muscles from both shoulders i now have a spur on my right shoulder and a torn tendon in my left shoulder. The sheath of thin muscle across my chest was used to rebuild my neck, so it is very thin with only skin there now. I don't eat the same anymore and sometimes bite my tongue or cheek. I was depressed for months after the op and had thought that it would of been better to not of had the op. But I look at my grand kids and am grateful that I am here to see them today. Mind you if it comes back it will take a walk to the crematorium with me, if Chemo or radiation can not get rid of it.

Re: Throat Cancer Worry - Help

@Thread starter,I am of no help to you, however I have some of the same worries.

@The one who had a scope used to locate his cancer:
I have had an ultra sound, cat scan(both showed up Ok) and now my ENT said he can scope thru my nose and look down into my throat.
directly below my ear lobe where my jaw bone meets my neck is where I have ittitation, only it is inside, when I swallow it feels always there is something there,at times there is burning as well, and a dry sensation.I feel pressure in my jaw. My dentist says it is TMJ however,I have no headaches.ect..

This has been going on for 10 months.

Can anyone tell me what exactly the scope procedure is like? What can they see? I have been also spitting out black/powdery fiberglass particles in my mucous for 1 year, since leaving a job in a badly venhilated factory. If there is a buildup of this stuff somewhere, will they find it ?I think it is causing all my symptoms.
I wish best of luck to all of you and also thank you in advance, for many answers to questions here, often help more than just the asker .

I have survived neck cancer now since January 03 when I had my surgery. I also had a CT Scan, but nothing showed up well until I went for an MRI. Ten months is too long to be waiting. Tell the ENT that you want an MRI!

The throat scope is not a big deal. They spray some stuff up your nostrils and it numbs them and your throat. The scope goes up a nostril and then down into your throat. He/she can look around all the way down to your vocal chords, but you are having the biggest problem just under your ear at the jawline. That is where I had my trouble. It is called the carotid space if you want to look it up.

I thought I had a swollen gland in my neck, turned out to be a tumor. Then the ENT said it was a 'glomus tumor' which are rare and almost 100% benign. I have learned that doctors make wrong decisions, that glomus tumor was actually TWO squamus cell carcinoma tumors, a very aggressive cancer, but I did not find out until they were actually doing the surgery. It was followed with maximum radiation of the head and neck and chemotherapy.

Because of where the tumors were (in the carotid space) I lost three of the 4 very important nerves in that space so I now cannot speak well, I cannot swallow, my shoulder has lost 60% of its control and some other annoying things. That is tough given that there is nothing wrong with my vocal chords, my throat or my shoulder except that the nerves that control them are severed.

Hopefully you have insurance that will allow you to push this forward. Dont wait, time is against you if there is something bad which usually can be fixed if found soon enough, or the time to drive you crazy until you find out that you are ok. Tell the doctors what YOU want, not what they recommend. Go do your research..... and then push them push them push them.....

stb.
