Question Throat cancer

I had a lump feeling in my throat and a severe earache on my right side.(for 3 months)

I had a biopsy done last week and will get the results today. I am very nervous.

Everything I read about throat cancer, includes an earache.

Doing the biopsy, the doc told my husband that he found a cyst and cut it out and will do a biopsy on it. He said it was easy to cut out. But, he said he will have to find out why I have an earache because it is probably referred pain.

My ear is just killing me. The pain is so intense. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Has anyone had a severe earache and lump in throat?

I really am expecting the results to be throat cancer since I do smoke. I'm worried about what stage it is.

Any replies are more than welcome.

Thanks
bozey

Re: Throat cancer

Hi Bozey,

I can't tell you what to expect etc, but I can relate. For the past 3 months, give or take a little, I've been having this really horrible pain in my throat like I'm trying to swallow a giant stone. I can't swallow when it happens and I literally roll around in pain. Also I've been having extremely strong heartburn that nothing seems to help, always in the spot of where I get the lump feeling. Also when I get the lump or heartburn, I get bad earaches, which also happen without any throat pain. I do have a hard time breathing as well, but I do have Asthma, so I can't really tell. Except sometimes, my inhaler just doesn't work as well as it usually does.

Cancer runs strong in my family. My uncle was diagnosed with Lymphoma in August 2005, my cousin (19 at the time) diagnosed with brain cancer in February this year, my grandpas sister passed away this year from cancer and my grandpa passed away from lung cancer on November 24th. My mom had cervical cancer in her mid 20s and is now being tested for colon cancer. My grandma had a dark shadow in her chest they found right before she passed away this June.

I dont know if we have throat cancer, but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. My first appointment is on Wednesday, so I'll know more then.
What were your biopsy results? I'm here if you need me.

((Big hugs))
Alicia

Re: Throat cancer

Alicia,

Thank you for replying. I still haven't gotten my results. They say sometime this week now! I hate waiting.

Let me know how your dr. visit goes also.

Yes, unfortunately cancer runs in my family also. My Mom died 36 years ago when she was only 36. I was 17 and in high school. That was really a rough year.

My younger brother died 10 years ago at 38 years old. He died of lung cancer that got to the bone.

My Dad had prostate cancer 10 years ago but overcame it and then passed 4 years ago from alzheimers and parkingsons disease.

I have an older brother left who seems fairly healthy compared to me. He is 55 and has shoulder problems from being a carpenter and chronic broncitis.

Having such a deadly illness run in your immediate family is scary.

I just hope if I do have throat cancer, we caught it at an early stage.

Thanks for caring and I will post when I get my results and you do the same.

Re: Throat cancer

Bozey,

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's so hard to lose anyone, no matter what the cause is. I was raised by my grandparents, it was like losing both my mom and dad only 5.5 months apart. It's been hard and I know it will be for a long time. But, I'm really happy they don't have to suffer anymore. My grandpas lung cancer when we found it, he had a 4x6 tumor in his chest and 3/4 of his brain was covered. Personally, finding that out exactly a month after his wife of 45 years passed away, I could not be as strong as he was. He was such an amazing man. He was 65 when he passed, it was just 6 days after his birthday actually.

I'm sorry you have to wait so long. I've been dealing with infertility issues for the past 6 years, I finally got my HSG done last month after waiting since January, I can definitely relate to hating the wait. It scares me so much to think that if I do have cancer and have to go through chemo, I will most likely never be able to have children. It scares me to death, that's my life long dream.

I agree, it's very scary to have a deadly illness run in the family. Unfortunately, cancer isn't the only one in mine. Diabetes is another very common one, as are heart problems. Cancer is the only one that scares me though. And it's not so much the fear of cancer, I sat beside my grandpa while his heart stopped beating and he took his last breaths, but it's the treatments that scare me. Does that make sense?

Can I ask how old you are?
Yes, please do post your results when you do finally get them. It never fails to amazing me how long results can take to get. I hope you get them soon though. Try to stay positive though and take care. Oh, I wanted to ask, how was the biopsy? Did it hurt or anything?

Alicia

So sorry about your G'pa & G'ma. But you are right, no matter how much you miss them, at least now they are out of pain and misery.

I understand what you mean about the treatments being scarier than the actual diagnosis. I agree.

I am 53.

I am so sorry to hear that you may not be able to have children. I hope they find an easy fix for you. All I ever wanted after I graduated high school was to get married and have 2 kids, a boy and a girl. And it worked out perfect. I've been married 34 years now.

I got my results yesterday. It is not cancer! Yeah. I am so relieved. But at the same time, still worried as to why I've been so sick. I have an appointment this morning with my ENT doc so I will get some answers.

The biopsy didn't hurt at all. It only took about a half hour under local anesthesia. My throat was sore when I swallowed but it is finally calming down. My ear pain finally was about half yesterday. And, I have had to limit my talking for a week.

But, I could eat and drink anything just like normal.

Well, today is your appt. too. I hope it goes well for you. Please let me know. I will give you a follow up after my visit.

Hugs

Re: Throat cancer

Bozey,

That's wonderful news! I'm so happy it's not cancer! How was your appointment, I'd also like to know why you've been so sick. My appointment went okay. The doctor said from all the heartburn I've been having in my throat, I have a big, bad burn in my throat. So I have some medicine for a really strong anacid now. He said we'll try that first, if it continues, to come back and go from there. So so far, no cancer.

Thank you. It's been hard, I'm honestly dreading Christmas with out my grandparents. But I'll make it through, as always. Thanks, it would be nice if they could figure out why I can't get pregnant. I'm so young still, I shouldn't have this problem, I'm only 21. I understand starting to try to start a family at 15 isn't exactly good, but I'm thankful I did so I know what I'm up against now. My appointment for my HSG results and hopefully prescription for Clomid as all the testing and surgeries have been done, is on the 18th.

Wow, doesn't sound bad at all. I've only gotten two uterus biopsies and they hurt really badly, I assumed it was the same regarding pain. I'm glad your throat pain is calming down, and I'm happy to hear your ear pain is some what settling as well. Hopefully it'll continue to do so.

So are you all ready for Christmas?

I hope you're well!

Re: Throat cancer

Alicia,

I am glad that your appt. went well. I, too have some really bad acid reflux. Doc gave me 2 scripts. I have GERD and LPR.

I know 21 is very young but you know your body better than anyone else so if you have any weird symtoms, please get checked for cancer since it runs in your family. Keep going til you get an answer for your symptoms.

Try to enjoy your holidays. You will miss your grandparents for the rest of your life. But time will make it easier. My Mom has been gone for 36 years and I still miss her. She died in October and the first Christmas without her was really hard. Don't hold back your feelings. Cry when you need too and release the stress. Talking about them will make you feel better too.

Good luck with your appt. on the 18th. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If you like, you can post here and let me know your results. I would really like that.

As far my doc appt. yesterday, I am still aggravated that he doesn't know what caused the cyst on the back of my tongue and he doesn't have a clue why my earache has been so intense so he is sending me to an ear specialist.

Hopefully I will get some answers from the new doc. I need to call and make the appt.

I am so not ready for Christmas. I've only bought about 4 gifts so far! I'm starting to think that gift cards are a great idea! LOL

Are you ready for Christmas?

I hope your meds work for you and you are on the road to recovery.

Re: Throat cancer

Hi Bozey,

Thank you. I will keep going back if I get symptoms, I'm too nervous to get cancer not to go back now. 4 cases of cancer in the past year, it's too much. My doctor said if the meds don't work, to go back. So I assume it could be something else, but he wants the burn to clear up first just to see. This prescription is for Ranitidine HCL 150MG. My mom was also taking it for a while, she said it works well. I just have to wait until the first day of my next cycle to make sure I'm not pregnant, which I'm sure I'm not given my current situation.

It's been a rough day for me today. It's been three weeks since my grandpa passed away. I can't believe how fast the time goes by. I'm still in denial about my grandmas passing, never mind my grandpa. I did completely break down today though, cried, scremed, cried some more. Of course my hubby got some of it. Poor guy. We're having a big family dinner/celebration of life on the 23rd for him though, so that'll be nice. I remember a few days before my grandpa passed, my 4 year old cousin said "I don't want Papa to die, I might miss him." It was so sad. She's lost 3 grandparents this year.

I will keep you informed about my appt. I wish it would come faster, but that's the way it goes. the things you want the most take the longest to get here. I think hubby has to have one more SA done before I start Clomid, but maybe not. It's been above average every time, thankfully.

I must've missed the part about the cyst. Do you have cysts anywhere else? I'm just curious because I have multiple ovarian cysts and breasts cysts. Lately I've been getting cysts other places. One a couple inches above my pubic bone and then another right at the top of my inner thigh. I also get them in my armpits from time to time. I hope the earache goes away, or they at least figure out what's going on and can fix it quickly. I used to have extremely bad earaches and headaches when I was little. I'd sit on my grandmas lap with my head of her chest for the warmth on my ear and just cry. The headaches, I had a CAT scan done, but it was normal. No explination for either.

I'm in about the same position as you when it comes to Christmas. Actually, financially it's been a bit rough lately. But we make sure the kids get something, that's the most important to us. We have a Santa out fit I'm hoping hubby will wear again this year. He said he's just not feeling festive this year, which I do understand, I feel the same way.

Hope you're doing okay Bozey.

Alicia,

Sorry I've taken so long to reply. I've been too busy to be on the computer during the day and my hubby sits here and plays solitaire in the evening.

But anyway, I don't have any other cysts that I know of. I always had earaches as a child too. I remember as a child when I spent the night at my grandparents one time, I had an uncle that was about 20 and he was out on a date. He came home about 1am and I was crying from an earache. He got a bath towel and put it on the wood burning stove and got it warm and put it on my ear. It sure made it feel better. To this day, he is my favorite uncle. Funny how things like that stay with you, isn't it?

I can get an earache on a warm windy day! I hope the ear doc can fix me. I still need to make an appt.

I hope your cry made you feel better. I'm sure your husband understands. That is alot of stress you are having with one thing after another. 2007 has got to be better right? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Maybe next year, you can get on with your Christmas traditions. Just take it easy this year.

How did your Dr. appt. go?
