Throat Cancer

My father whom is 83 yrs old was just diagnosed with throat cancer. I would appreciate anyone whom is going thru this or a family of a loved one that is going thur this to please give me some info. We are doing a pet scan on tues Sept 21 to see if the ca has spread then meet with the cancer dr on friday to go over results ..the dr has already said its curable in early states squmas cell cancer...and he would need radiation tx for about 8 weeks...
I am really concerned about the radiation tx...my dads health is not the best he has a iliostmy bag , appetitie is not the greatest now..
I am thinking what is his quality of life going to be and would it be worth it to do the radiation tx..

Terry

Re: Throat Cancer

My friend was diagnosed at 37 years old with stage 4b. He is now 6 years clear. Your dad needs to bulk up before treatment, he will lose weight. Radiation cause a very sore throat and no taste. My friend had a feeding tube.Try to protect the saliva glands also. The treatment is brutal but it works! Good luck to you, if i can help please let me kno!

Re: Throat Cancer

I was diagnosed with throat cancer (squamous) at age 72. Had 33 rad treatments. Now 12 years later everything is quite normal.

Radiation will eventually cause a very sore and reddened neck similar to extreme sunburn, and the esophagus will get very sore. The doctors can give oral medicine that helps with the esophagus but there's no gainsaying the fact that the skin on the neck will be painful.

Try to get him to eat while it's not a problem. He will reach the point where eating is difficult.

But it's worth it if the cancer is obliterated.
