i have been diagnosed with early stage squamous cell carcina of the epiglottis T1N0 radiation therapists wants to do that and surgeon wants to do lazer surgery to remove epiglottis and no radiation. im confused and trying to get to the best treatment for me.has anyone dealt with this senario?other than this i am 58 and in good health.
In September 2011, I was facing the same choices you are, with a slight twist. I started feeling like there was something stuck in my throat, after visiting and being scoped by a ENT and a pet scan, I was given the terrifying news, cancerous mass on my epiglottis. My ENT did not feel qualified to handle this. He recommended a Dr at The James in Columbus Ohio..I was given the choice of chemo and radiation or de vinci robot surgery, with possibly chemo and rads after....My husband, grown children and I decided to have the surgery, get this devil out of my body.
My surgery, 8 hours, was November 2, 2011..I was cut from one ear to the other...4 nodes were removed to be on the safe side... I can tell you, I am not sorry for my choice..the road to recovery was not easy, but doable.
The nodes came back void of cancer and I've been cancer freee for 7 months now. Months of speech therepy has taught me to swallow and my voice has returned full force ( much to my husband's dismay lol).
I am still on a soft food diet, but that's because my dentures no longer fit correctly and I've waited to heal to have new made...this will take place the month of July, after that, I'll see what happens with eating and swallowing more varity of foods.
The scar is barely visible and is in a neck crease, I do have some fullness in the neck and cheeks until the fluid that use to go into the nodes find and reroute. I have one ear that's numb, I can hear it's just still numb.
I did have one episode of pnenomia caused by food going into my lungs ( aspiration) but a barrium xray showed what I needed to do to make sure that doesn't happen, that was in January 2012 and I've done well since then.
I've babysat my Grandson since he was 4 months,( he's 4 years now) I was not able to November, December and part of January...but have since then, driving him to preschool, parks, library, etc...I was a little embarrassed to go in public with no teeth, but everyone has been so nice and it get's old sitting home, so I put pride aside and just have fun.
Good luck with whatever choice you make, I am 66 and in good health...plus my attitude is bring it on Devil, my God will show you who's boss!
Please feel free to ask me any questions...I live in Ohio, where you from?
Anxlady, please read my post to Bigchili~~~
I went to my family Doc 3 times in Sept 2011 because it felt like something was stuck in my throat, each time she did not see or suspect anything..I asked her to refer me to a ENT and to this day noone can believe I did because normally I would just shrug it off, ok, if you don't see anything it's ok...this time, I think I knew something was way wrong.
I was a smoker for many years, enjoyed my cigerettes and a drink now and them...November 2, surgery and have not had one thought of smoking....Dr didn't say smoking caused this, but come on, we know when we're tempting fate. I also worked in a factory with fiberglass for years and for 5 years was a nail tech, working with a lot of chemicals...no answer to why I ended up with this horrible disease, but if you have any thoughts that something is wrong...run, to an ENT...
Well one of the primary causes is "Acid Reflux" usually Chronic(prolonged) Acid Reflux. Also another cause, could be Soda, or anything else that is acidic to your throat/esophagus lining. Just look what happens when you leave food out, bacteria grows on it.... that's the same thing that happens in your throat..and also what causes ulcers too... If you have acid reflux, drink water and smooth drinks, things like "milk" or "ice cream" it helps, but of course, antacids I have that same problem now actually, having something in my throat for 7 weeks, feels like i'm choking every time i try to eat anything solid, lost over 43 lbs in 7 weeks, now i'm having trouble breathing at times, dizziness, nausea, regurgitation of foods.... and having the inability to burp....Man, that makes you panic lol... cause it almost feels like you're going to choke when you cannot burp....anywho! I'm due to meet up with an ENT Specialists after 2 doctors have referred me to one....
