Question are these symptoms of throat cancer?

I have had a sore throat for the past few weeks. my voice has changed dramatically over the last 3 months. I can feel a lump in my throat and have constant pain in my throat and ear which gets worse when I swallow. I feel as if something is abstructing my throat and find it difficult to breathe, which has become 'louder' I have pain in the neck and shoulders> I am currently waiting for an appointment from the ENT department. Are these symptoms of throat cancer? After some research my instincts say yes.

Re: are these symptoms of throat cancer?

Only a doctor can tell you for sure if it's throat cancer. That's why it's SOOO important to see a doctor immediately. Even if you can't see an ENT, try going to see your primary doctor who can get you in the right track, to see the appropriate doctors like oncologists, or maybe just get you in to have tests done quickly to determine what it is. If your breathing is becoming difficult, you must act right away as throat cancer grows quickly. Symptoms are different depending on the type of throat cancer. There is base of tongue, tonsil, etc. The symptoms depend on exactly where the cancer is in the neck area. Symptoms only arise when it starts affecting your normal bodily functions, for example, breathing, swallowing. Cancer is just simply an overgrowth of tissue that grows without stopping. It only hurts you when it impedes an organ from doing its normal job or interferes with body functions like breathing, going to the bathroom, etc. Other than that it can't be felt. However, it's SOO critical to get an early diagnosis for the best possible outcome. The earlier you detect it and get started with treatments, the better chance you have for survival! No treatment can save you once it's metastasized (ie spread throughout your body via the lymph system or blood).

Re: are these symptoms of throat cancer?

went to ent today. Doctor did a check up and said it seems as if it is acid reflux and gave a bunch of anti-acid tablets to take. I was very disappointed with his lack of interest in my symptoms. He flatly refused to do a biopsy or other tests. Did nothing to relieve my fear of throat cancer. I am now thinking of seeing a private doctor for a proper diagnosis as I have never suffered from acid problems or ever experienced even mild heartburn.

Re: are these symptoms of throat cancer?

You know, Acid Reflux can cause throat cancer. I'm sorry your doctor was so dismissive, it's just that there are only 38,000-50,000 new cases of throat cancer per year in the US. They are always so quick to throw out pills for acid reflux.....i got that too from 2 doctors, but after they didn't do a thing to help, i got referred to an ENT Specialist. Try to speak up if you havn't already, express your concern that it's throat cancer, and remember, you have the power, not the doctor..don't let them push you around. Of course if you do (i hope you don't) have cancer, you can always sue that doctor for malpractice/negligence.

Thank you for your support. It was a specialist that I saw at the hospital. Despite seeing a lump and inflamation in my throat, he dismissed my fears. I am due to see him again in 2 weeks and I hope to push for a biopsy as the medication he gave has done nothing for my symptoms. Can I ask what was your final diagnosis from the specialist and what were your symptoms?
