Question Did your Thyroid Cancer come back?

Question: Are there any symptoms of a thyroid cancer that has returned and or spread?
What tests are indicated to check for this?

I am interested in hearing any stories from those of you who have had recurring or a spread of thyroid cancer.

Re: Did your Thyroid Cancer come back?

Hi Benzi,
Does your Dr. check your thyroglobulin count when you have labs done? My Radiation Oncologist has told me that if the thyroglobulin number goes up...it could be a sign of recurrent thyroid cancer. My number has been running 1.5...it should be at 0 for patients who have had thyroid cancer. I had my thyroid removed in July 03 and just had my 2nd RAI treatment in Aug.(due to thyroid tissue glowing in my neck area on my 1 year scan). You would think my thyroglobulin # would be at 0 after 2 treatments, but it remains at 1.5.

I've also been told to occasionally check the lymph nodes in my neck. My Dr. also does this at my appts. every 6 months.

Are you having annual whole body scans done? What type of thyroid cancer did you have?

Hilery

BENZI:

No...so far as I know. Of course...it didn't really bother me to begin with. YES initaial shock..but I was VERY healthy when it was disovered. Now that...I'm doing the med madness I'm sick...so cancer is no worry. You don't want to focus on that really.

Think good healthy thoughts...and you will be healthy.

I can tell you I'm in the process of making a major overhaul of my diet and thought life to make sure I don't do anything to re-open the door.

Don't worry...Benzi JUST ARM yourself. It will be a wild ride...but you will come out better in the end. That's what I plan on.

~S

PS: you find here an excellent resource...so you have already done yourself a great favor.

Re: Did your Thyroid Cancer come back?

Softcrush, I think my problem is that I have been so busy not worrying the last 15 years that I sort of forgot all about my thyroid cancer. I have never had any follow-up's to check for reoccurance. Then I started having all these new symptoms that reminded me way too much of how I felt when diagnosed! I also have a lump on my hip, one on my knee and my lympth nodes are swollen and painful now for about 8 weeks. My voice has changed so much that people are starting to comment and I am having trouble swollowing. My yo yo Gp ( who I fired) had lowered my synthroid so much that I went hypo and she wanted me to stay hypo even though, after cancer they do not want that. I should have checked into it right then and there but dumb trusting me I did not. I was hypo for a year and finally changed PCP who I had to talk into up-ing my synthroid, I am angry with myself for trusting her and angry with her for putting my health in jeporday. I feel that if PCP's do not want to educate themselves about thyroid cancer then they should send you to a specialist. I have finally talked my current PCP into doing that and will be thankful to see him next Tuesday. Like I said it's not all the PCP's fault, I should have done some reasearch on my own before now. Thanks to all on this board who have made my reasearch easier. By the way I eat a very good diet and walk aprox 5 miles per day. Better say I did until got sick this time.

BENZI:

I understand how you feel BENZI. It would be great if we could leave the doctoring to the doctors, so we could pay attention to living our lives they way we were meant to.

The doctors are pretty hard-headed. They are hard to fight when you are vulnerable too. I'm very aware of that. I feel bad that I too, trusted the docs...when they didn't deserve it, and now I'm paying.

That is why I encourage you to take your time, and do the research. In the end you may wind up having to sort of "augment" what the doctors want...in order to feel good.

They aren't keeping a roof over your head, and taking on your responsibilities. That is why you have to be the ultimate decisionmaker.

I do wish you good luck with this!
