Unhappy is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

In November my doc ran the usual thyroid function tests and included a full blood count. My wbc came back as nearly double the normal levels, so he has now run some more tests which has included a test for carcinoembryonic antigens, This test was taken 15 days ago and just when I began to relax, believing that no news was good news there was a letter from my surgery asking me to make an appointment to see my dr. I called the surgery and the receptionist said that this test had come back as being elevated. indicating the possibility of some sort of cancer.
now I am really scared, and cannot get to see my doc until monday eve.
I am just wondering if there is a link between hypoT and Thyroid cancer, can anyone shed any light on this for me.
I am really hoping that if i do have cancer, then please let it be thyroid.

I cannot believe this is happening to me on top of everything else. I was just begining to feel really well, after months of trying to get my body to accept the thyroxine. I was getting my life and health back and now yet another thing to deal with.

Hi Daisy Iam so sorry to hear that things are not going to good for you . i will pray for you, As for any links between hypo T and Thyroid cancer , Iam not to sure .Did the receptionist say to you that it may be cancer , If so she is not allowed to tell you what she believe's it could be ,you say that your test come back elevated What come back , was it your white blood count, If so this could mean that you have a infection somewhere . i hope you are ok try not to worry it may not be what you have been led to believe . take care.........Mandy

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

Thanks maz,
No the receptionist just told me that the levels had come back elevated, but I already knew what the test was for.
to be quite honest I was suprised that it came back like this, as I dont have any symptoms of anything, no lumps bumps etc. The only new thing I have is ovarian cysts.
It just seems like its gonna take forever until monday.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

I just read last night that a person with a history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is at a 70-fold increased risk of developing thyroid cancer than the general population. There is definitely a link.

I hope your futher testing will prove otherwise. My heart goes out to you! I'm not sure why they give that kind of information over the phone just before the weekend! It's frustrating. Have you looked it up on the Internet yet? Maybe there's some helpful info somewhere.

Love and Prayers, Kelly

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

daisy,
I had lymphocytes keep coming back highly elevated and that only sounds like luekemia..............then I had a positve test for Epstein barr come back postive................do you have a nodule on your thyroid or hashis' because the antibodies that come with that can throw off alot.

Once I had my thyroid out all those tests came back normal. My thyroid was actually all lymphocytes so that was the reason they were so high in my CBC.

You don't really say if you have hypo or have you been diagnosed with thyroid disease.............can you give a little more thyroid info?

Best wishes and prayers and don't get too worked up because so many things can be going on and yet we all focus on the worst case scenerio, it is human nature.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

I have hashis so maybe you are right Kant and the test results are skewed because of it. my TSH is currently at 9.7 and T4 is 13 I am feeling well despite TSH being so high. The only trace of the hypoT is a little residue brain fog. I have been working, keeping on top of the housework socialising etc
here in the UK they dont test for antibody levels after diagnosis, as they say it doesnt matter as the treatment with thyroxine would be the same anyway.

I know it may sound strange but the thought of it being linked to thyroid cancer is a comfort. I have read that if you are gonna get the big C then this really is the best one to get as it is the most curable.
I am not sure where I go from here with regard further tests etc so any help on that would be very much welcomed right now.

thank you all for replying, you really dont know how much I appreciate this and how much calmer I feel.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

daisy,
If you have hashi's then perhaps you have many antibodies throwing off things in your lab work. I remember from other posters that in the UK it is harder to get the proper tests. It really is an injustice to your health. Have you had an ultrasound to see if there is a nodule because they are very common with hashi's. Your labs are strange for you to feel well..............

Hashi's does have a higher risk of a nodule being cancerous but you don't know if you even have a nodule, right? That is what is cancerous on a thyroid............the nodule turns cancerous.

Call on Monday and get in and see what is what, but do keep in mind that with an autoimmune disease all kinds of things can be amiss in labwork. I had all that wierd stuff come back in my CBC but my thyroid labs were perfect..........a dr finally found 2 nodules on my thyroid and then the end of the story is I had a TT.....

Let me know what you find out on Monday.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

Ok, NOW I am freaked out!! About 2 months ago, I had blood work done .. too check for Thyroid issues, and my WBC cameback elevcated too.. by 3 points, not a big elevation level, but elevated the same. When I asked the nurse about this, NOT the DR, she told me that I could have just been making new WBC.......But Now I am kind of wondering... I just saw An Emdo last week, and he re ran some tests, a whole bunch, and should get those back in like a wk...

Hang in there sweetie, I know just how terrified and worried you are.. i was too, too the point I was sick too my stomach for days after hearing it was elevated.. I still have no idea why, but I am going too be asking again, I wonder if mine will still be elevated from this second draw of blood done by my endo

Sending you Big *HUGS*

Missy

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I had thyroid cancer, and all my blood work was perfectly normal---regular, and thyroid. There is no pre-surgery bloodtest specifically for thyroid cancer as far as I'm aware of (there is one after your thyroid is removed and ablated called thyroglobulin)....I could be wrong.

The only way I heard of to diagnose thyroid cancer is with a biospsy---sometimes a FNA with a needle to a nodule, or the biopsy after surgery.

A high wbc can be due to an infection.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

hi everyone, its not the elevated wbc that i am worried about but the elevated levels of carcinoembryonic antigens(CEA) they ran this test after i had elevated wbc and realised that I also have ovarian cysts which i have never had before. the gynae was just checking that I hadnt developed ovarian cancer. I am still waiting for the results for the CA125 and CA199

from what I have just read on the net CEA is a general screen for cancer and then they delve further to find out exactly what type of cancer you have, if any at all. one article said that it really is an inconclusive test as some disorders can give false positives. It didnt say which disorders though so whilst it gave me a little hope, I am still in the dark so to speak.

I know one thing for sure, I am going to demand that I be refferred to an endo after this. I dont think my GP really has a clue to what thyroid disorders are all about.
maybe i will chain myself naked to his office door until he writes the refferral.
so keep an eye on msnbc news guys, lol
only 1 day to go now, I am not sure if I will be able to concentrate at work tomorrow or not, but fortunately I have an excellent boss.

Re: is there a link between hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer

daisy.............

HAHAHAHA, oh, you gave me a great laugh and girl I have felt that desperate!!!!

My sister had the CA125 come back positive and she was freaked out and it was nothing.............I cannot remember what they determined caused it but she had a hysterectomy for endometriosis.

Like I said...................my bloodwork was pretty scary too and it was all due to hashi;s because now without my thyroid it is all normal..................

please let us know what you find out tomorrow.

Karen
