| Correlation to Thyroid Cancer and Colon Polyps/Bowel Problems
While researching thyroid problems on the internet I read where they have found a correlation between a type of thyroid cancer (sorry can't remember which one) with colon polyps and diahrrea. I'm curious as to if anyone on the board was diagnosed w/Thyroid cancer and had colon polyps or bowel problems.
I was dx'd w/Hashimoto's in 04 - 2 years ago I started having a lot of bowel problems, nausea, diahrrea, etc. Went in for a colonscopy and they found a benign polyp and nothing else (no IBS, Chrohns, etc). Later that year at my yearly endo appt he felt a "lump" and swollen thyroid and sent me in for an ultrasound. Was dx'd w/a multinodular (at least 11 nodules) goiter, the largest at 3.5cm. At that time he suggested surgery and I went to a surgeon who left it up to me. I opted not to have surgery. This past year I had another ultrasound and it showed not much change. But I continue to have bowel distress. I did not think to ask about this correlation to either the surgeon or my endo.
My endo and 2 surgeons have suggested to have a total thyroidectomy - which I have scheduled for Dec 16th. I have not had any biopsies as they all 3 said we could biopsy the most suspiscious looking ones and they could be fine, but another could have cancer cells in it. And not very feasible to biops all of them. And the only way to really know would be to take it out and send it in.
My endo said a year ago cancer risk 5-10% - how he came up w/that percentage, I don't know. Now after reading this about colon polyps and bowel problems, of course I'm a bit concerned.
Any thoughts/ideas/comments would be appreciated.
Thank you.
