Need info on thyroid lab results and advice! Thanks

Hi there,

I have been diagnosed hypothyroid apprx 2.5 yrs ago after gaining 60lbs very quickly and having other symptoms. Put on Levothyroxine - been on 88mcg/day since. All the 60lbs came off once on meds, TSH went from 6.72 to around 2.0 and have been symptom free since...until recently.

Around the beginning of July I began gaining weight like crazy for no reason plus other hypo symptoms. Went to check TSH and it was up to 4.05 (almost doubled 4 months). They also tested my Free T3 and T4 but those tested normal. Went to 5 doctor's because they all said it was "within normal range" and none of them wanted to increase my meds. Finally found one who would - increased to 110mcg day. TSH tested again 6 weeks later and TSH up even more to 4.12 despite increase.

Went to endo who tested for antibodies -Tg ab and TPO ab. He switched me to brand name Synthroid and increased to 125mcg/day. He felt my thyroid and said it was enlarged but not to the point he was concerned.

Told my PCP about what endo had said. She recommended thyroid ultrasound. Had it done last Friday. They found multiple, large, irregular nodules. Radiologist and PCP both said they are very suspicious of cancer. Having FNA biopsy in the morning.

More concerning... endo never called me to give antibody test results. I called them and they said they were normal. Called yesterday to get actual copies of labs for new endo specialist and was SHOCKED! My TG ab was 378 and TPO ab was 824. My PCP said the TPO ab indicates Hashimoto's (not overly concerned) but she said the the TG is a strong indicator of cancer also.

I've read a lot online and it seems TG is only concerning if thyroid has been removed. Is that true? Has anyone had similar levels and symptoms and if so, what was your outcome/findings?

I've known a few people personally who have gone through thyroid cancer (papillary) and RAI treatment and are doing well. Just curious as to if anyone has had similar lab results/levels and ultrasound results?

Heard FNA biopsy not too reliable... True??

I appreciate any advice and input!

Thanks so much,
Stephanie

Don't know about TG but if there is reason to think it may be cancerous then they will probably take out part of your thyroid just to be sure and biopsy it. If they think there is no reason to be suspicious they will leave it in a monitor your nodules closely for change.

My FNA was accurate (cancer).
