thyroid nodules

A family member has thyroid issues, so she is on thyroid medicine, but recently she was sent for an ultarsound. The bloodwork showed her antiobodies are attacking her thyroid. The ultarsound showed that enlarged nodules. What does this mean? She is now being sent to a thyroid specialist. What does antiobodies attacking her thyroid mean? Her thyroid blood work was ok. Any advice or help?? Thanks

Re: thyroid nodules

Hi,

She might have Hashimoto disease in which the thyroid gland is gradually destroyed by a variety of cell- and antibody-mediated immune processes. I had that condition 11 years ago as well as thyroid cancer . Because of the cancer, they took out the thyroid and it took care of Hashimoto as well . Good luck,

Re: thyroid nodules

yes it sounds like Hashi's, but Hashi's and cancer do not necesarrily go hand in hand....many people have Hashi's and do NOT have cancer.....don't worry, check the regular thyroid board for more info

Re: thyroid nodules

What explains the connection? It’s a case of mistaken identity. The molecular structure of gliadin, the protein portion of gluten, closely resembles that of the thyroid gland. When gliadin breaches the protective barrier of the gut, and enters the bloodstream, the immune system tags it for destruction. These antibodies to gliadin also cause the body to attack thyroid tissue. This means if you have AITD and you eat foods containing gluten, your immune system will attack your thyroid.

Re: thyroid nodules

I agree that Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the culprit if thyroid antibodies are elevated. This can cause thyroid nodules, and early on thyroid function is ok but eventually the thyroid stops producing adequate hormone levels and replacement therapy is needed. A thyroid scan and ultrasound can help rule out cancer, but benign thyroiditis is much more common than thyroid cancer, so I wouldn't be overly worried about that. But do see a thyroid specialist for further evaluation and treatment. A gluten intolerance could be present so that should be checked out as well, as the previous writer suggested.
