Genetics

Does anyone know if uterine cancer can be an inherited thing? Both of my grandmothers had it, and I was just wondering how much of a risk that puts me at. Thanks

Re: Genetics

I just checked on the internet and it said heredity does play a factor in uterine cancer. My sister was treated for it a couple years ago. I just had a uterine biopsy because of very heavy periods and a thickened lining. I was very worried. Fortunately, it was negative.

Yes, there can be a predisposition to it. I had it and I've advised my daughters that they are both slightly more at risk. Just make sure to have regular checks, let your doctor know and if you have ANY abnormal bleeding, get checked. Caught early, it's very curable.

Re: Genetics

I'm just worried about it because I'm 48 years old and going through peri-menopause with the heavy bleeding and clots and so forth, so I am afraid that might mask the symptoms of uterine cancer since heavy bleeding is one of the symptoms of cancer. The doctor says my hormone levels are extremely low and that is causing the excessive bleeding, and I have been on prempro for the last few years, but got off of them a few weeks ago, because I want to know what my body is doing without the prempro. I don't even get a period when I take them. I'm just wondering if the doctors will assume since my hormone levels are off, that that is what is causing the heavy bleeding no matter what. I know the insurance company's don't like to pay for a D&C unless it's absolutely necessary.

Re: Genetics

You might look into an ultrasound. If that shows anything suspicious, the doctor might recommend a uterine biopsy. That should be covered.
