Provera for uterine polyps? Is this med safe? - Cancer: Uterine Message Board

Had a endometrial biospy several months ago for postmenopausal bleeding (very light bleeding). Ultrasound and biospy came back fine but doctor said the pathologist report included atypical polyps. Doctor has prescribed Provera for three months- to start my period and try and "flush out" the uterus. I am to go back in three months and decide then if another biospy is needed or further treatment-with last resort hysterectomy.

I am somewhat concerned about taking a hormone with all the news reports against it and the side-effects such as blood clots, cancer risk increase etc..

I went to a web-site for Provera and read some of the side-effects and I am somewhat concerned. If anyone has taken the medication I would appreciate your input.

I was on depo provera as a form of birth control.. if this is the same drug - i'm not sure.

I did decide to come of it, as i found out about the cancer risks involved. I am at higher risk due to genetics for breast cancer adn I discovered a breast lump (turned out to be benign). That was 3 years ago now.

I don't know alot about the drug, so would recommend speaking to your GP and consultant if you have one. They will be able to discuss the pro's and con's of the drug in such a short term of use. Might be that the benefits outweigh the temporary risks.

Sadly a lot of drugs have side affects but we can't always avoid them totally. I do understand your concerns though.

Provera and Depo provera are two different things!

I take Provera 10 days a month. It was prescribed to me because I was spotting all the time. It has, for the most part, regulated my period and I get it like clockwork. I am 48 and he chalked my issue up to peri. I also had endometrial biopsy. Mine showed nothing.

I do not have any side effects. I have gained a little weight but my MD said not due to provera, more than likely from perimenopause/hormonal changes.
