Need Women's Opinions, Please. - Cancer: Uterine Message Board

My wife is almost 52 years old and has been in menopause for the past 18 months (hot flashes, cold chills, etc). She is overweight and has never been pregnant. It's been 18-24 months since her last period (maybe longer).

About 2 months ago, she had vaginal bleeding (period) which lasted about 7 days, then stopped. We heard that having post menopausal bleeding is a bad sign, so she went in today for tests. They found a single polyp about the size of a marble in het uterus, and had it removed. They also did several biopsies, and like everyone else, we're now in the waiting game for the next 10 days. she is schedules for a CT scan, which I'm guessing is to check out the lining thickness of her uterus.

Are polyps a bad sign, and is the bleeding + polyps a strong indication of uterine / cervical cancer? I'm very worried about what is taking place now ans was wondering if any women here are knowledgable in this area?

Hello Mark,
I'm sorry you are going through this. You seem like a very caring husband and I wish I could answer your questions. My mom too had a biopsy last Monday and had a polyp inside and outside the uterus. I don't believe all polyps indicate cancer. I guess we both just have to wait for the results. I am scared just like you. I'm trying to really stay positive for my mom and take one day at a time. Good luck and keep us posted. I will say a little prayer for your wife tonight.

I'll surely let you know. And my wife will be getting a sonargram, not a CT scan (no biggie I guess). I've read that most polyps are benign, so the bleeding is much more of a concern. And maybe the 2 aren't even related, for she could have easily had one without the other. Plus I've read that when caught early, uterine cancer has a very high cure success rate. We'll keep our fingers crossed and our prayers rolling along, for both of us.

I'm 53 and was diagnosed with uterine or endometrial cancer. I go Monday to find out how it is going to be treated.
I was different then your wife. Most of my life I did not have periods due to a Pituitary tumor. And I probably had 6 of them in the last half of my 40s. But about 16 months ago I noticed a droplet of blood everyday in the toliet and gradually it got to be more, not a lot though. So I have bled everyday for at least 16 mos. And to top it off my hormone levels indicate that I'm in the menopause. Talk about confused. When I should've had periods I didn't and when I shouldn't I do.

But stats do show that women who don't carry a pregnancy are at a higher risk for Endometriosis (thickening of the lining of the uterus, not necessarily cancer). Fat in a women can produce Estrogen, which can lead to cancer. Also if there is a family history of colon cancer, etc.; they can increase her risk.
Like I said I'm 53, so I've heard of a lot of people dying from all types of cancer. And eventhough they still do............a lot more don't.
One very good thing about the uterus.......you can live without it. Right now I have a friend dying of pancreatic cancer....that you cannot live without.
So there is HOPE for your wife and me!
I don't even know yet where my journey will be taking me and there are already some bumps, but as long as I have the love and support of friends I'll get to where I'm suppose to go the best way possible.
So no matter what your wife is up against, she has your support and love, and that will be her best medicine.

I had 'in between' bleeding in my 30's and also unnatural discharge. They did an exploritary and also removed a polyp. It wasn't cancerous. I agree, the waiting time is the worst, but as someone has already said, most of them are benign, so try not to worry too much
