Endometrial cells in pap test

I am posting this on behalf of my mother-in-law.

My mother-in-law just received the results of her pap test and it says: Atypical endometrial cells suspicious for adenocarcinoma. The doctor says no endometrial cells should be present past menopause on a pap test.

She is 79 years old and has no symptoms of uterine cancer except she has had an unusual discharge for 3 years that she attributed to a pessary that she got around the time the discharge started. The discharge is not bloody.

She is scheduled for a D&C, but because of her age has to have a heart stress test first.

Is there anything besides cancer this could be?

Endometrial carcinoma is likely a possible Dx. Why are they doing a D&C ( with anaesthetic) and not doing an "Endometrial Biopsy" which can be done with no anaesthetic and will confirm a Dx.I wish her the very best. I already have a diagnosis (Dx) of endometrial adenocarcinoma and am awaiting surgery - soon I hope.

I asked the doctor the same question you have, why not a biopsy? He said because of her age and heart, he thinks it will be less stressful for her to be put into "twilight" sleep and have a D&C which will get more cells to sample, than have her fully awake and undergo a "painful procedure" (his words). He said she is very skiddish even about having the Pap test (and she is) and he thinks she will not tolerate the biopsy well.

The only thing I can come up with according to her pap results is cancer.

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. What kind of surgery are you going to have, open abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy? I hope all goes well with you.

Will be having an Abdominal hysterectomy- surgeon explained that in order to check for nodes, etc. have to do an abdominal. This is OK with me, just anxious to get it over with.
Have quit smoking - 11 days today (with Nicorette Inhaler- works great!).All the best to your mom-in-law.
