shell shocked...

My FIL jst had an appointment w/ his liver doctor,he has chirosis, back in Nov. or Dec. they found a spot on the liver. He had a Ct scan done about 2-3 weeks ago and today he was told he has 2 tumors on the liver. He didnt say much but said he has to go for a bunch more tests, Another CT scan, MRI. He never said that it was Cancer, but said the doc wanted to try radiation to try and shrink them so they can remove them, but then in the same breath he said if they remove them ,i will need a transplant. This is what confussed me, why do a surgery if its gonna end up w/ a transplant, why not do the transplant. He didnt want anyone to go with him, so i know he's shell skocked and didnt want to press the issue yet. he also mendtioned Chemo, but was confussed. cann anyone give possible insight on this???any push in the right direction is helpful, thanks
edited to add they think its hepatocellular carcinoma

My mother also has liver cancer but no chriros. You or someone needs to ask the Dr. some very specific questions. First if there is 2 tumors how big are they. My mother has 2....one is 5.3cmx3.2cm and the other is the size of a pea. Where at in the liver are they located, has it moved into the vascular part of the liver. My mother is about to have radiation to remove some of the tumor that has moved into the main portal vein and is slightly occluded due to the tumor. Has it spread anywhere else, pancreas, colon, etc...what treatments other than transplants can they offer. Ask about RFA, Cryosurgery, Chemoimmoblization, Ethenol injections. We wanted surgery to remove the tumors so bad, but the one tumor is a little to big right now, so we are doing chemotherapy(Cisplatin and 24 hour 5-FU via pump) She is doing very well on it. Ask what if they drew a CA 19-9 and what the result was. The higher the number...well you get the picture. My mothers was at 6,000 before her first treatment, now after 6 weeks it is down to 4,000. We did a experimental study for UCLA for ultrasound and the radiologist said it has not grown at all, in fact it has shrank a little...we will tkae that. As long as it is shrinking so we can get surgery. Did the tell why they dont go in a cut out the tumors...are they just to big? I feel for you and will pray for you. My family is very spiritual and believe in the power of miracles and prayer. My mother is only 49 so I like you was shell shocked to say the least. Plus I am the big mammas boy of the family, we have a very co-dependant relationship...to a fault almost. But I had a nervous breakdown when the Dr. told me. Then to add to everything else, the rest of the family asked me to tell her. So I prayed for the power to be strong for my mother and not breakdown and try to look at it positive and told her the day after her gallbladder surgery in the hospital. But like I said she is very spiritual and is 100 % positive she is going to get through this with God's help. She says that the Dr.s are wonderful and made huge advances in cancer, but that God alone is the great physician and will count on him to get her well. I know it is hard, I am on the google search engine day and night looking for treatments and how liver cancer works. I can probably tell our regular Dr. more about the liver than he knows. Keep faith. It is hard but faith and a positive attitude are very important. I will pray for both of you.

Tim
