Bood sputum. Cancer??

Hi,

I have had a terrible 4 weeks of worry. I have had small amounts of blood in my spit for 4 weeks. Its only occassional and wasnt there for 2 of the 4 weeks. Had it yesterday once and then none today. I have had two lots of blood tests which were full blood counts and they have come back fine.

I have had a chest X-Ray - also fine and blood tests on liver and kidney, all fine.

I am going to a nose, throat and ear specialist this week but I am now scared i have cancer, maybe of the throat. I have noticed my voice is a little hoarse at times.

Im 33, smoked for 10 years, stopped a month back. Dont drink really.

Feel fine apart from that, eatting well. Generall ok as my blood tests revealed.

My doctor thinks its just a blood vessel or polyp and says its highly unlikely to be cancer.

Any thoughts?

Re: Bood sputum. Cancer??

Bloody sputum is a symptom of cancer, yes. But it's also a symptom of many other things too. No sense in putting the horse before the cart. I know it's easier to say it than to do it, but try and relax and let the doctors run their tests. I'm inclined to agree with your doctor, given the fact that all of your other tests, including a chest xray, have been normal. The blood could very well be coming from a blood vessel at the back of your nose or in your throat area. You say your voice is a little hoarse, and that sounds like irritation, which could be bleeding a bit when you cough or clear your throat.

Re: Bood sputum. Cancer??

Thanks Katyana,

When this bleeding started I did not have any throat problems, but now I feel like there is something there. I was wondering where the bleeding was coming from, it was thought my stomach or somewhere. But tonight I was eatting some fries and a steak and it felt like the food got caught on something in my throat. I then looked and there was some blood. So the food I gather got caught on something and caused it to bleed.

It sounds like you have a very sore throat and it's inflammed, therefore a bit swollen which makes you feel like things are getting stuck. Maybe it's your tonsils? Or maybe you irritated the esophagus on something sharp when you swallowed. I did that one time while eating pork chops. There are sometimes small bone fragments in chops. I didn't notice one until after I swallowed. I was sure that it was lodged sideways in my throat. It wasn't. But it sure felt like it. Another time I went to a restaurant and ordered a Diablo Lobster dish. OMG it was hot!!! I had 3 bites and I had burns in my mouth and throat from it. Blisters too. My throat was sore and bled for days.

Anyway, I doubt very much you have cancer. Try gargling with warm salt water (warm tap water mixed with salt so that the salt doesn't dissolve anymore), and gargle several times a day. Give your throat a rest and drink non acidic fluids (try and avoid juices like orange, citrus, pineapple, cranberry and their associated fruits). Try a soft diet low in spices, instead of things you have to chew up (toast is not considered soft, but plain bread is ). If you have steak, mince it into small pieces and eat smaller bites and chew more.

Re: Bood sputum. Cancer??

My throat doesnt feel sore as such. Just something there that bleeds when scratched by something. Tomorrow I will know more from the Ears, Nose and throat specialist. Its all really worrying, which is natural.

On the postive side I have not smoked for 4 weeks, drank caffine or alchohol and eatten healthily. I intend to keep this up. Scares like this really put things in perspective. Its amazing what you are able to do, I always thought a life style change would be difficult but I managed to do it over night.

I'll let you know how I get on. But there does seem to be something there which is not healing. Feels like it heals and then bam it gets opened again
