Anyone have a cure for the mouth sores I'm getting from Chemo using cystplatin and 5FU? I can handle the weakness, nausea, swollen throat, and not being able to taste anything but those mouth sores are going to do me in! Have tried "Magic Mouthwash" Tylenol, liquid pain medication and completely coating my tounge on all sides with oral pain relievers. Nothing seems to work completely or for long. Help!
Have you spoken to your doctor about this? You may just be particularly sensitive to the chemo, but there may be something your doctor can do.
Also, you mentioned nausea...are they treating you aggressively with anti-nausea meds? You should be getting IV zofran before the chemo, and then the pill form of zofran, one a day for at least 3 days after chemo. Also, the night of chemo you may need compazine.
There are some other anti-nausea meds, unfortunately I don't remember the names, but you definitely should try something else if one doesn't work. But the key here is preventing the nausea in the first place, if at all possible.
I'm on chemo for hepatitis. Different drugs but similar side effects.
I agree - I coped with anaemia, nausea, insomnia and everything else but after several months of constantly ulcerated/inflamed mouth, painful gums, swollen taste buds on tongue - I couldn't figure out what I could eat that wasn't painful. Not that I wanted to eat but if I don't the twice daily tablets make me feel really really ill.
My specialist suggested an anti-inflammatory/anti bacterial mouth gel. I don't know if you have same brand names but I used Difflam mouth gel. I wish I'd known about it months before - it would have saved me a lot of pain. I'd not been able to eat fruit as the fruit acid was too painful. It worked. Within 24 hours I was free of mouth ulcers and they haven't returned. I only used it a few times a day and waited a while after applying before eating/drinking. (I had anaemia for the duration which I think made me more susceptible.)
I do continue to get inflamed taste buds almost every day. If you get them (thank heavens for the net) I followed the advice of someone on line who suggested using fine scissors to cut them off. I was repulsed but after three months of very sore tongue I was desperate and followed advice. Fantastic doesn't hurt (only remove the white area)and instant relief. Hope you don't get them as well!
Keep eating whatever you can manage that is relatively healthy. I ended up eating soft crackers washed down with water. Bread was too painful to chew, sweet/sour/salty food irritated ulcers/gums. It cured my chocolate addiction - too painful. Avoid very hot/cold foods.
Hope this helps. We're all different so it may not work for you. Being in Australia I couldn't get Magic Mouthwash which is advice I'd found on-line. I don't know if it is a similar thing. Teething gels apparently are not strong enough for adults. Take care.
MY HUSBAND IS FINALLY FINISHED WITH CHEMO-RADIATION TREATMENTS. HE HAD SIMILAR SIDE EFFECTS, FOR THE NAUSEA
ZOFRAN WORKED WONDERS FOR HIM, HE TOOK THE MEDICATION JUST BEFORE THE CHEMO AND THEN AGAIN A FEW HOURS LATER
IT WAS AMAZING NO NAUSEA. ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT IT. FOR THE MOUTH SORES THEY GAVE HIM SOME GRADE ONE MOUTH RINSE WHICH ONLY HELPED FOR A WHILE THEN HE MADE A RINSE WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND WARM WATER. IT SLIGHTLY BURNED THE FIRST TIME THEN HE BEGAN TO RINSE WITH IT MORE OFTEN AND IT REALLY HELPED. TRY TO EAT SOFT FOODS, HE COULD TOLERATE EGGS OVER-EASY, I DON'T THINK HE WILL EVER EAT ANOTHER EGG AFTER THIS. I HOPE THIS HELPS. I WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT IT DOES GET BETTER, IT JUST TAKES TIME AND HANG IN!!!
