Question Lump on bottom jaw

I've just noticed a lump on my bottom jaw. I can feel it by pushing on my face down on my jaw. It feels deep, round or oblong. It also seems sore, probably from messing with it.
I also have fibrocystic breasts. A year back I found a lump that kind of felt the same. I had it surgically removed. It was benign.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm 47 yr. old female, don't smoke; drink some.
Thanks!

Hi,
It's about halfway between the back of my jaw (which ends just in front of my ear) and my chin. If you push down on your lower cheek you can feel the jaw. That's where I'm feeling it. Not under it, more on the top of it. It's deep into the skin, feels smooth, maybe round or oval, maybe the size of a fingertip. Seems like it's attached to the jaw.
Thanks for any opinion you might have.

I only have experience with what felt like a lump when it was my jaw muscles in a knot from a car accident. It was half way between my ear and mouth, about an inch or inch and half up from the bottom of my jaw. When i would press on it, it would ache. If you have had any problems with your jaw, opening and shutting your mouth, problems chewing food, an ache in that spot after chewing, a clicking sound, it could be the muscle. I was treated by the chiro. for my problem, but mine was severe, as i could barely open my mouth sometimes. The spot where mine was is right where the bottom and top jaw meet, and if you put pressure on that area and open and close your mouth, you can feel where they meet, about the middle of the cheek. This is all I have experience with. Also, I know that the salivary glands are located in the bottom jaw area. I hope you find the cause.

No, I don't have any problems opening or closing my jaw. Everything seems normal, except for the lump. Thanks.

Question

Hello DLD,

I have the exact same "problem" as you. I was born with a small lump of something underneath the skin on the left side of my jaw, right under my ear. I dont know what it is either, but Ive been doing alot of research with it.
My mother said when she was pregnant with me, she craved some fancy European chocolate and my father could not find it. My mom thinks that not having that food at that one time gave me this little lump on my jaw. All I know is that I was born with it and that it sometimes pushes out when I do handstands or cartwheels. When it pushes out, it feels really uncomfortable and distorts that one side of my face.
Im just afraid it might be cancer or something.
You said you just now noticed this lump; maybe its been there but now it just started bothering you. Mine has started to ache the side of my face. Hope this helped somewhat. ~Rasp

I had somthing similar and it turned out to be a lymph node. (The doctor thought it might have been from an infection in a tooth.) See a doctor to be sure.

I went to the Dr. sometime ago and she thought it was a salivary gland that was blocked. If you feel inside my mouth in my cheek next to my jaw that's what it feels like. It feels like a gland.
She wasn't at all concerned. Just said to let it be unless it gets bigger which it hasn't.

I most definitely don't want to scare you, but you should have your doctor run a CT scan just to make sure that he/she doesn't see "anything" in the salivary gland. The only reason I say this is because I was feeling the same "lump" under my jaw, it was my salivary gland that seemed to be a little swollen. My doc suggested that it could be blocked. Once the CT scan was taken there was clearly something wrong with the gland. It showed up dark on the scan. I did have it removed to see what what wrong with it and it turned out to be a rare type of cancer.
When stuff like this comes up, make sure that your doctors take the time to explore the possibilities of what it could be. And get it checked ASAP, I waited for over 12 months for this to go away and it didn't and it could have been a lot worse.
Take care!!

Thanks for your information. Why did you wait over 12 months to have a CT? Did it grow at all? Was it at all painful? I hope you don't mind me asking you all these questions. When I asked my doctor if I should have a biopsy she said that it would be painful to do that and as long as it wasn't getting any bigger I could let it be. I think she said that people at my age sometimes get blocked glands. (I'm 47).
I'm not sure what I should now, though. Would you mind telling me the name of the cancer that you had and were you able to take care of it completely? Thanks!

Hi DLD,
I don't mind questions at all.... I waited so long because the first doctor I saw said that allergies could be making my gland swell. And I was comfortable with that reason for a long while (I DONT like doctors or hospitals!!) And as the months passed, I would experience some sharp pains in my salivary gland-like once a week. It did not grow at all. So, I still didn't think anything of it and didn't really tell anyone about it. Finally I told my mom that it was still there and she MADE me go and get it looked at. I saw an internal medicine doctor and she recommended an ENT specialist. He is one that took action. Exam, CT scan, and then removal. He told me that we could do a biopsy, but it would most likely need to come out anyway. So I opted for no biopsy and just to remove it.

It turned out to be Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, pretty rare, but sneaky cancer. I ended up having 2 surgeries, one to remove the gland/tumor and the other to take lymph nodes, nerves, and muscle to make sure that the cancer had not spread. Since then I have completed 30 radiation treatments, and my first check up is in 2 weeks. Hopefully it has been taken care of completely at this point.

That probably was way too much info! hahaha. Well, if you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi Rrricola,
Thanks for the info awhile back. I asked my doctor for a CT scan and it came back normal. After what you told me I was afraid to let it go. I now feel I have peace of mind, which is what I needed. Otherwise, you never really know for sure. Hope everything is going well for you.

Hi, im a 26 year old female with a lump under my jaw-mine too is half way between my ear and chin. It feels about half an inch long and is slightly tender to press. Its seems to put pressure on my wisdom tooth if i press too hard- so maybe its something to do with that or maybe a salivary gland. I also have fibrocystic breasts and lipomas in my lower back so perhaps its a lumpy person thing.
