I got a small beebee sized lump on top of my foot a while back... The first night it was a little painful like a bruise. The next day the pain was gone but the lump flattened out wider... It has since gotten just a little bigger and some of the pain is back, mainly when I put my weight on that foot. I'm a little nervous, should I be?
It sounds like maybe a ganglion cyst. They are very common on the wrist but can also appear on the foot. My husband has had one on his foot for a couple years. They are harmless and only need attention if it is bothering you.
If this is causing you pain when you put weight on the foot, it would be a good idea to have it checked out by a doctor. Is the lump continuing to increase in size? That would be more of a reason to have it checked out.
Actually, it seems like maybe it hasn't grown any more in a while and I've been feeling the pain without weight on it. However, it's not much pain. I'ts kind of a dull pain at the side of my foot (not on the lump).
Since you did post on the cancer board, I suppose I should tell you that my oldest son had cancer and the cancer started in his left foot. It was a rare childhood cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. There was no obvious lump--both his feet looked the same, but the tumor grew and completely filled the space between the bones about midway of his foot--only 6cm by 2 cm--it had already spread to his bone marrow and even after 4 months of aggressive chemotherapy it came back in bone marrow and took his life on August 25, 2005. If there were any symptoms at all in his foot it was that he had problems with it cramping.
That said and I didn't mean to scare you--your lump is probably nothing, but it would be good to have it checked out considering you are having some pain even without putting weight on it.
