Question painless neck lump

Hello, I just found this site and am just hoping someone can help me. I have an ultrasound booked for this Friday (the longest week of my life is waiting for this exam).

Last Monday, I noticed a lump on my neck in the child-view mirror suctioned to the windshield of my car. I'd say its about the size of an avocado pit, is under the skin, right at the top of my neck under my jawline. Not at the front or side of the neck, but inbetween there - sort of where you'd feel for a pulse, carotid artery area. It doesn't hurt, but is a little tender when I press on it. I went to see my doc 2 days after I noticed it and the first thing he did was start questionning me about cancer which scared me thoroughly, especially since I am currently 32wks pregnant with my second child. It is a high-risk pregnancy and I am mostly confined to the house, and just had my last tummy ultrasound with big thumbs up that all is going well and I will probably make it all the way to my due date because of how good things look. Just when I was able to stop worrying about the baby and the pregnancy, now this.......

I am adopted, and know there is no cancer on my maternal side, but know nothing about my paternal family. The doc sent me for a full blood workup to test for mono, mumps, toxoplasmosis, leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid issues, CBC, etc..... all came back fine. You'd think that would have calmed me down a little, but waiting for this ultrasound just has me crying non-stop. The doc was kind of mystified because he doesn't think the lump is in the right spot for a gland or node. I've been put on antibiotics in case of infection, in which case you'd think it would have gone down, but I'm on Day 5 of the pills and no change in the lump.

Anyone with similar experience here? Any and all stories welcome. I need to be informed before this ultrasound. Thanks in advance.......

Re: painless neck lump

Hi
I can tell you that my son has a lump behind his ear and it has been there for about a year. It has not gotten bigger and has gone down a little. He had an ultrasound and it was fine. I took him to a dermatologist also and they say it is a fibroma. They did inject it with a cortisone shot and it went down a little. They also gave him a topical antibiotic as well because it looked a bit scratched. Hang in there. I would call the radiologist and beg to be put in asap as you are very worried and this is not good for the baby and yourself. Tell them you are willing to sit and wait in the office(if you are) so they can squeeze you in!!! Do not and I repeat do not go on the internet. It can make you crazy. It could be a hormonal thing related to pregnancy. let us know how it turns out.

hugs
Haley

Also
since I do not practice what i preach, I did some searching. Could you have a tooth abcess? Maybe you have an infection in your mouth?

Re: painless neck lump

Thanks for your reply Haley, I really appreciate it. I called the radiology place, and they can't/won't get me in any sooner than Friday, so I just have to wait unfortunately. They are a whole chain of labs in our city, and the central booking office didn't have an appointment any sooner than the one I have booked. <sigh> Oh well....... I'm going to try my best to stay off the internet, I know what you mean, and I have preached this very thing myself in the past. Its just so tempting to reach out there in the hopes of finding an answer.

Wouldn't a tooth abcess hurt? And wouldn't these antibiotics I'm on be helping that if I did have an infection in my mouth? Doctors can be so cruel, I can't believe he was so focused on the cancer discussion with a 32wk pregnant woman when there could certainly be other ideas to rule out first. I will let you know how it turns out. PS. I'm 37.

Tx also for the hugs....

Re: painless neck lump

Trying to hang in there, but feeling really desperate and pathetic. IF anything, the lump is getting bigger. I used to wake in the morning, and before I got up, I'd feel for it and think "IT'S GONE!!!!!!!" But then I'd get up and it would be there. Almost like laying down, it would sink into my neck a little. Today, I can feel it even laying down. u/s Friday morning can't come soon enough. Tx for listening.......

Re: painless neck lump

I have done the same thing. I think the darn thing is gone and keep touching it. Then from touching it and bothering it , it gets bigger. I will be thinking of you on Friday. try to relax and leave it alone. i know, easier said than done.

Re: painless neck lump

I had the lump on my neck ultrasounded today, to check for malignancy. Apparently it is some sort of solid mass (as opposed to a fluid filled cyst), and I will need to have a biopsy done on it, so thatís next. They couldnít tell if it was an enlarged gland or node, or whether it was malignant or not, really the whole exam was quite un-informative. Iím not sure why the doctor questioned malignancy on the requisition, since they couldnít tell one way or another by ultrasound. Oh well, I guess Iíll just wait for my biopsy now. Hopefully I can get an appointment soon for that. Only 4 wks til the baby comes and only around 5 til we moveÖÖ..

Re: painless neck lump

Hi. where do you live? I would now call my ob and tell them you want a biopsy soon. An ultrasound can tell a simple lymph node from a mass. Has the lump gone down at all? They can't do a cat scan because of your pregnancy.
Let us know what happens.

I live in Canada, land of the free (read: get what you pay for) healthcare. Nothing happens fast, nobody listens to you even if you demand. I'll keep you posted....... and I'll do my best to expedite things.

Re: painless neck lump

Hi,
I have a daughter who is 17 and she has a lump in the same place, it is a lymph node, she has had trouble with it off and on for almost two years now, we have to go back but most likely it's going to be removed. From what I've been told is that lymph node is very sensitive, it you get acne around your mouth area or chin, that node gets big. Now I had a big one on the back of my neck, it was a mass and a very large lymph node, they removed it and I had no cancer. Hang in there, I know it's hard.

Re: painless neck lump

Ya see? I really think it will be okay. What does your doctor say? have you spoken to him since having the sonogram? My son's lump behind the ear is still there and has gotten smaller but it has been over one year. it takes time. It could be an infection that will need a topical antibiotic. Let us know.

Re: painless neck lump

Thanks Karen, it was good to read your message. My lump is quite big today, and bothers me a little when I move my head around, also getting more tender to the touch. I have been leaving it alone entirely though. I dont' know if it psychosomatic, but swallowing seems a little strained. Does your daughter have any "feelings" to her lump?

The ultrasound report said "Solid nodule near the angle of the jaw which I favor represents a pathologic enlarged lymph node. I cannot exclude an exophytic neoplasm arising from the tail of the parotid gland, but favor this may be less likely. It is my opinion that definitive histologic characterization of this is necessary."

Last night I went to see the original doc who sent me for the u/s. He was concerned, especially when I told him I was having my baby in 4wks and that it had gotten a little bigger. He was all set to take the lump out himself right there. I asked him about a biopsy, and he said, we just need to get it out of there, whatever it is. He didn't feel comfortable doing it since there are lots of blood vessels in that area, and with me being pregnant, he didn't feel comfortable taking it out himself (I have to say I was relieved about this). He called the ENT specialist at the closest hospital immediately and spoke with her expressing his concern and the urgency of the situation. I will be getting a call from her office first thing on Tuesday morning (Monday is a statutory holiday here) and she will do a biopsy on Tues or Weds. THANK GOODNESS. Just hope this thing doesn't keep getting bigger until then. Its already 1" by 1" by 1"........ yuk.

Karen I hope your daughter's lump removal goes well if it comes to that, and Haley, I hope that your son's resolves one way or another too. How old is your son?

Re: painless neck lump

Hey,
Obviously I am not a doctor but to grow so fast does not sound like it is cancer. I Hope that Tuesday comes fast and that you can get an answer soon. My prayers are with you. I am glad your primary dr got things moving. Let us know how the biopsy goes. My son is 13 and we also found the lumb by accident last Easter. A ball hit him in the ear and my husband was checking his ear for bruises and came upon the lump. We thought it was from the ball but he must have had the lump for awhile and did not notice it.

Hugs
Haley

Re: painless neck lump

Hi,
My daughter is seeing an ENT and we are going to take it from there. I myself have had two surgeries on my neck, the first on was a cyst on my thyroid, I was pregnant at the time so I had to wait till I had the baby to have it removed, by that time it was huge. Then the mass and lymph node on the back of my neck, had that taken out. None of them cancer. Now I have a goitering thyroid with a growth on it which is being monitored, they are afraid if they take out the growth because it's so close to my vocal cords that it will affect my voice, He said I would sound like Mr. Ed the talking horse and have voice fatigue, I'm going to get a second opinion because I feel it is necessary considering my past history with things growing in my neck.
