~*~Abnormal Protein???~*~ - Cancer Message Board

Well I'm seeing a hematologist for my anemia since I am iron deficient. But now she told me that I have an abnormal protein in my blood, aka monoclonal gammopathy. When I asked what it was she said it's a protein that detects cancer, such as multiple myeloma but could be lymphoma or leukemia. But I can't be diagnosed yet. She says I'll have to keep having blood tests and she'll have to monitor my blood. I've had a bone scan that has come back normal. Now I see an orthopedic doctor for my knee that I had operated back in 2006 and when I told him about it he wasn't surprised that my bone scan came back normal. He said most of my tests will show normal. However he agrees that my blood has to be monitored and explained the different cancers. Has anyone heard of this, gone through it or know of someone who has?

It's been a while since you have posted but I have a little information for you. My dad died from Multiple Myeloma. Seven years ago I was diagnosed with benign monoclonal gammopathy. Basically that means I have the abnormal protein spike, however, not enough or with enough other symptoms to be indicative of multiple myeloma. However, there was concern enough that I have a serum electrophoresis every 6 months. I am seen by a hematologist/oncologist and she keeps a monitor on me. This doesn't mean I'll develop multiple myeloma, just that I may showa precursor to having it.
