The pancreas produces insulin and other hormones, also enzymes that are vital to the digestive system. You cannot function without a pancreas. No food would be processed through the body, you would be a total diabetic as well.

They can remove the pancreas, this is called a total pancreactomy, but usually they only do it if they can harvest the Iclet cells and transplant them to the liver, and hers are probally cancerous. Have you spoken to a pancreatic surgeon or specialist?
How old is she? Has her cancer spread?

Jackie

She is 42. Her cancer has not spread and we're thinking to fly her abroad (Miami or The Netherlands) to see a cancer surgeon specialized in pancreas tumor.

Txs for answering

Re: my niece has a pancreas tumor why can't they remove the pancreas?

They can remove the pancreas, and the patient becomes a brittle diabetic. However the most comman surgery to remove the tumor is the whipple. The two hospitals in the states who really specialized in whipples where the surgery was pioneered and perfected are Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and MD Anderson in Houston. If you choose a surgeon, pick one who does a high number of whipples a year at a high volume hospital.
