I'm hoping someone out there can help clear up some of my confusion! After months of suffering with progressively worsening back pain, my mom finally had an MRI done of her lumar and thoracic spine. The lumbar report says she has "multiple intramedullary bone lesions consistent with metastatic disease within the lumbosacral spine." The thoracic report says she has "multiple thoracic spine metastases most prevalent involving the T5 vertebral body." The oncologist ordered a biopsy to find out what type of cancer she has and the biopsy came back negative for cancer. Does this make sense to anyone? The MRI reports are from two different radiologists and I find it odd that they would both see metastatic disease, but the biopsy would be fine. She is still in severe pain and her mental capacity has really diminished in the past week. The oncologist has basically said to go back to her primary care doctor and get referred to a spine surgeon to consider removing the lesions which he believes are benign. Is it likely that someone would have benign bone lesions in nine vertebrae? Further, how likely is it that those lesions would appear to be metastatic to two different radiologists? I'm just not convinced that there is no cancer, but don't really know what to do next and I'm grateful for any suggestions! Sorry to be so long and drawn out!
