 CEA levels at 4500 - is there hope it's not cancer

Someone from my family just got results for CEA over 4000, up from over 3000 around a month ago. Is there still hope it's not cancer? They're 60 years old, very heavy smoker, had colonoscopy done with some polyps found, but the doc said they are unlikely to be a problem (pending results in a couple of days).
Apart from that there are some disturbing results from a MRI on the liver and spine, but I don't know any specifics.
Any info or pointers for research really appreciated.
